Updated at 8:11 a.m. ET: A suicide car bomber struck early Monday at the gates of Jalalabad airport in eastern Afghanistan, killing nine people in a large blast, officials said.
Among the dead were six civilians, two airport guards and one soldier, Mohammad said. Another six people were wounded, he said.
An AP photographer saw at least four destroyed cars at the gates of the airport.
The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, that they also say killed a number of U.S. soldiers and members of the Afghan interior ministry, a spokesman told NBC News.
"Our suicide bomber carried out suicide attack at a time when the U.S. troops opened the main entrance for change of the night time shift at the airport. Besides American soldiers, a number of Afghanistan interior ministry personnel working (with) the U.S. troops were also killed in the attack," the Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told NBC News.
He said it was revenge of the desecration of holy Quran allegedly by U.S. forces at the Bagram airbase.
But NATO forces spokesman Capt. Justin Brockhoff said that no international forces were killed in the early morning attack and that the installation was not breached by the blast.
Escalating violence
The blast comes a day after demonstrators hurled grenades at a U.S. base in northern Afghanistan, and a gun battle left two Afghans dead and seven NATO troops injured Sunday in the escalating crisis over the burning of Muslim holy books at an American airfield.
Violence toward Americans in Afghanistan continues as eight soldiers were wounded during a protest. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
More than 30 people have been killed, including four U.S. troops, in six days of unrest. Still, the top U.S. diplomat in Afghanistan said the violence would not change Washington's course.
"Tensions are running very high here, and I think we need to let things calm down, return to a more normal atmosphere, and then get on with business," Ambassador Ryan Crocker told CNN's "State of the Union."
"This is not the time to decide that we're done here," he said. "We have got to redouble our efforts. We've got to create a situation in which al-Qaida is not coming back."

The attack on the base came a day after two U.S. military advisers ? a lieutenant colonel and a major ? were found dead after being shot in the head in their office at the Interior Ministry in the heart of the capital. The building is one of the city's most heavily guarded buildings, and the slayings raised doubts about safety as coalition troops continue their withdrawal.
The incident prompted NATO, Britain and France to recall hundreds of international advisers from all Afghan ministries in the capital. The advisers are key to helping improve governance and preparing the country's security forces to take on more responsibility.
A manhunt was under way for the main suspect in the shooting ? an Afghan man who worked as a driver for an office on the same floor as the advisers who were killed, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said. He did not provide further details about the suspect or his possible motive.

The Afghan officials had planned to meet with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey.
The protesters in Kunduz province in the north threw hand grenades to express their anger at the way some Qurans and other Islamic texts were disposed of in a burn pit last week at Bagram Air Field, north of Kabul.

PHILADELPHIA Dual inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor and c-MET signaling inhibited tumor invasion and metastasis in a laboratory model of pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer, according to a paper published in Cancer Discovery, the newest journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
"Inhibition of VEGF signaling plus c-MET signaling results in a synergistic effect on tumors that leads to slowing of tumor growth and decreased invasiveness and metastasis," said lead researcher Donald M. McDonald, M.D., Ph.D., a professor at the University of California San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Previous laboratory research had shown that inhibition of VEGF signaling with agents like bevacizumab or sunitinib can give rise to a number of side effects including increased tumor invasion and metastasis.
What was not known was whether anti-VEGF therapy results in elevated c-MET expression, which has been previously shown to promote tumor cell invasiveness and metastasis. To determine this, McDonald and colleagues conducted a two-phase laboratory study. They treated mice engineered to develop pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors with an anti-VEGF antibody, which reduced tumor size but increased invasiveness and metastasis. This treatment also increased tumor hypoxia and expression and activity of c-MET.
However, when both VEGF and c-MET signaling were inhibited simultaneously, there was a reduction in invasion and metastasis. The researchers tested three c-MET inhibitors: crizotinib and PF-04217903, which target c-MET but not VEGF signaling, and cabozantinib, a dual inhibitor that blocks VEGF and c-MET signaling.
McDonald said they conducted their initial study in neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors because the genetic mouse model of these tumors has been studied so extensively, and then observed the effect in other tumors as well.
"The intent of this study was to explore a mechanism, and there is no indication that this effect will be confined to pancreatic tumors," he said.

(Memphis??? 2/24/2012)???? Memphis Mayor A C Wharton announced a plan Friday to begin yearly audits for the city's disability pensions.? The audits will begin March 1st.
According to a statement, in 2011 the city paid out $16 million in disability pension benefits to about 590 retirees.? Of the 590, approximately 460 retirees received "line of duty" pension benefits, and 130 received ordinary disability pension benefits.
"For those city employees who were injured on the job or injured such that they could no longer do their job, we have made a promise to take care of them.? That is a promise we intend to keep," said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.? "From time to time, we do hear about retirees who might be abusing or taking advantage of our disability pension benefits and we currently investigate those on a case-by-case basis.? With these new guidelines, we will have a systematic way to ensure that all those receiving benefits should be."
The audits will require retirees to submit a statement of earnings, a physical/mental condition form, a notorized response form, and a form authorizing the release of information each year.
News Channel 3 first reported on disability pension benefits last May.? We learned that some recipients never work again.? Others, like TN State Representative Curry Todd, go on to have other careers.
Todd, a former Memphis police officer, hurt his back on the job 23 years ago.? Since then he's collected $29,000 a year in disability pension benefits, and has gone on to work as a basketball referee, a correctional officer administrator and a politician.
The head of Memphis' police officers union agrees that the city should go after fraud, but does not like aspects of the audits, especially when it comes to visiting certain doctors that may favor the city.
"These doctors probably have a contract with the city and they're receiving work from the city, and I'm quite sure they'd like to continue to receive that," said Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams.
"I don't want individuals to get over on the city, but I don't want the city to get over on individuals either.? And I'm starting to learn more and more that employees are getting the bottom end of the stick, and citizens are getting the bottom end of the stick as well," Williams added.

Lindsay Lohan, model citizen? Never thought we'd see the day.
The actress is kicking arse and taking names in the probation department these days. She got another glowing report from the judge overseeing her case this morning, and in one more month, could fulfill her requirements at last.
Judge Stephanie Sautner gushed, "You seem to be getting your life back on track!"
Sautner was impressed that for the third time in a row, Lohan completed her required community service and therapy sessions, saying "You're in the home stretch!"
By March 29, she must complete her final 14 days of community service at the L.A. County morgue, and five more therapy sessions. If she stays on track, it's over.
Well, mostly. Lindsay would then be placed on informal probation, meaning all she has to do is obey all laws ... okay, not a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination.
Still, sources close to Lindsay say that while she was no fan of Sautner in the beginning, she now realizes that without her, she never could've turned this around.
It was Sautner who decided she needed structure and rode her hard every month, even throwing her in jail here and there if need be, until she got the message.
It's working. Lindsay realizes the only reason new opportunities have surfaced - hosting SNL, starring in the Liz Taylor movie - are because people trust her again.
Keep it up, girl. We'll sort of miss your monthly arrests, but good work.

A U.S. human rights group says it has received troubling reports that Iran may have issued an execution order for an Iranian pastor, who was sentenced to death because he refused to recant his Christian faith and return to Islam.
?At this point, we can confirm that he is still alive,? Jordan Sekulow, executive director for the American Center for Law and Justice, told msnbc.com Wednesday evening.
?We know that the head of Iran?s judiciary, Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani, must approve publicly held executions, but only a small percentage of executions are held in public ? most executions in Iran are conducted in secret,? he said. ?We are calling on the Iranian government to release the pastor immediately.?
Nadarkhani, 32, was arrested and sentenced to death in Iran?s northern city of Rasht in 2009, Sekulow said.
An appeals court upheld his sentence last year after he refused to reconvert to Islam, his lawyer Mohammad Ali Dadkhah told Reuters.
Nadarkhani, a member of the Protestant evangelical Church of Iran and a father of two, had been given three chances to recant by the appeals court, Dadkhah told Reuters.
The United States and Britain?s Archbishop of Canterbury have called on Iran to save the life of Nadarkhani. Iranian leaders have rejected claims by Western human rights groups that the Islamic Republic pressures religious minorities.

Rihanna and Chris Brown collaborated on a pair of remixes recently, a surprising move considering all that transpired between the former lovebirds.
The 2009 Grammys marked the beginning of a domestic violence drama that revealed a darker side to Chris' relationship at the time with Rihanna.
But nearly three years to the day he beat her senseless, Brown, 22, and Rihanna, 24, are again spending time together - musically and personally.
The former couple, whose friendly behavior is no secret on Twitter and in person, hit the studio last week to record parts on each other's songs.
The remix of Rihanna's single "Birthday Cake," featuring Chris Brown, lacks no shortage of sex appeal – not to mention some very NSFW lyrics.
"Girl, I wanna f--k you right now," sings Brown, whose return to the Grammys sparked controversy. "Been a long time/Been missing your body."
While Rih doesn't get as down and dirty with explicit lyrics on Brown's remix of "Turn up the Music," she suggests a rather revealing message.
"I love you, baby," she sings.
Rihanna clearly does not care about any public response to her being with Chris again, but singing with him and dating him are different things.
So far, there's no indication that they're back together, despite the rumors of them hooking up numerous times. But it makes you wonder.

Many areas of the economy continue to struggle with the on-going recession; most areas of health care remain viewed as being recession proof. This is the big reason behind the sudden explosion in the number of higher education degrees available in the health sector. Respiratory therapist programs, just as an example, while once an obscure degree only offered at a handful of places are now offered at nearly every community college and technical school found today.
Division of labor within many care facilities is changing now. Roles are being restructured and job descriptions are being redefined in efforts to become more efficient while at the same time keep rising costs under control. Nurses jobs, specifically, are now being divided up into smaller more compartmentalized roles and some of the tasks that have traditionally been done by them have been split up into other smaller positions.
These programs are often not very long, some as short as eighteen months. This aspect appeals to a broader number of prospective applicants who may be interested in a health related field but are not ready to make a long term commitment to education for that purpose. The shorter time in school also means that there is less money being spent on it, which is a big issue for many people.
Aside from it costing less because of the shortened amount of time spent on it, it is also available to many through smaller local colleges and other technical schools. These schools are often times much less expensive than their larger counterparts. Put altogether and the programs in questions are far more accessible to far more people.
Making that education open to a wider array of people is exactly the point. Given the massive demand for people to enter into these specialized lines of work having the education available for people is a must. A growing number of career oriented high schools are offering the opportunity for students to begin these programs early so that they are ready for a career when they graduate.
The population is now entering a stage where are more people entering the latter portions of their lives. As they continue to age the demand for services is only going to continue to increase. Care providers are stuck in a place of high demand while costs of providing care are increasing as well. By creating these new specialized positions part of the costs are offset because they pay less than what a traditional nursing position would pay.
The benefits of this arrangement are not only for those at the helm. Working class families now have access to higher wages and different types of work than ever before. The real plus side is the improvement in quality of life for these families. These are people that would otherwise have had few choices for employment outside of the retail, service, or manufacturing sectors.
Career training today looks completely different from how it did just ten or even fifteen years ago. Respiratory therapist programs that are widely accessible to people are just one way that employers and the community are enjoying the benefits of these newer positions in industry. In short, this a win for everyone involved.

The last decade has brought profound changes in the North Texas commercial real estate scene, with firms merging, launching, growing, and falling apart (see chart below). 2012 should see continuing shifts, as the competition heats up for both talent and market share.
Two firms that ruled Dallas real estate 10 years ago?The Staubach Co. and Trammell Crow?s brokerage group?no longer exist, having been merged into Jones Lang LaSalle and CB Richard Ellis, respectively. CBRE (with TCC) has maintained about the same number of local brokers since 2001, but Jones Lang LaSalle (with Staubach) has diversified and added more than 40 professionals.
According to D CEO research, JLL now leads Dallas-Fort Worth with 155 local brokers; CBRE is close behind with 148. No. 3 Transwestern has more than doubled in size since 2001, from 47 to 105 local brokers, due in part to a 2005 merger with NAI Stoneleigh Huff Brous McDowell.
Firms to watch this year include Colliers International, which recently named a new managing director, David Pinsel, and made several key hires, including agency leasing specialist David Quisenberry; and Cresa Dallas, which has also lured a number of top brokers to its ranks, including office tenant rep Lance McIlhenny.

iPhone privacy feature was circumvented to allow Google to track what iPhone users were doing, privacy researcher says. Google settled another privacy case in October.
Google Inc. is under fire once again after allegations that it circumvented privacy protections built into the?iPhone?in order to track what users are doing online.
Skip to next paragraphA privacy researcher at Stanford University said Friday that the Internet search giant had made an end run around a privacy feature in Apple Inc.'s Safari browser, the default Web-surfing software for tens of millions of?iPhone, iPad and Macintosh users.
Graduate student Jonathan Mayer's report could deal a serious blow to Google, which in October reached a settlement with federal regulators who had alleged that in the company's 2010 attempt at social networking it used "deceptive tactics and violated its own privacy promises to consumers." Google's binding agreement with the Federal Trade Commission "bars the company from future privacy misrepresentations."
Now a group of federal legislators is asking if Google may have violated those terms by allowing advertisers to track Apple users' online behavior even when those users believed such tracking was disabled.
"Google's practices could have a wide sweeping impact because Safari is a major Web browser used by millions of Americans," Reps. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., Joe Barton, R-Texas, and Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., wrote in a letter to the FTC. "We are interested in any actions the FTC has taken or plans to take to investigate whether Google has violated the terms of its consent agreement."
If Google is found to have violated its agreement with the FTC, the company could face fines of up to $16,000 per day for each violation.
Google's latest privacy stumble came at the end of a bumpy week for the tech industry's best-known companies, with Apple, Twitter, Facebook and Path drawing criticism over the way the social media companies collect user address data from?iPhones.
Federal lawmakers are also questioning Apple after several social networking companies acknowledged that they were retrieving smartphone users' contacts without explicit permission.
Apple's Safari browser is designed to prevent websites from adding tracking files _ called "cookies" _ to phones until a user specifically visits the site. For instance, visitors to the Los Angeles Times' website could find a Times cookie on their?iPhones?but should not automatically have cookies from the sites of Times advertising partners.
But Mayer, the Stanford researcher, said Google used a method that could load users' phones with cookies from advertising sites other than Google.
Google spokeswoman Christine Chen said the company did not intentionally place advertising cookies on Safari users' devices.
"We didn't anticipate that this would happen, and we have now started removing these advertising cookies from Safari browsers," she said. "It's important to stress that, just as on other browsers, these advertising cookies do not collect personal information."
Chen declined to comment on whether the issue might mean a violation of Google's FTC settlement.
Privacy advocates criticized Google for what they viewed as a serious misstep, which they said was inexcusable for a company with its resources and technical know-how.
"Why were they in such a rush to push this product out that they didn't get it properly vetted?" said Justin Brookman, the privacy director at the Center for Democracy and Technology.
"They have this brand that they should be bending over backward to protect," he said, but "they may be cutting corners."
Google's FTC settlement last year focused on the launch of the social networking service Google Buzz in 2010. An early version of Buzz made users' private contact lists public, in some cases exposing the email addresses of Google users' friends, family and professional contacts without the users' knowledge.
Google also came under fire that year when its camera-equipped cars were discovered to have also been gathering huge amounts of data from people's private Wi-Fi networks, including passwords, personal emails and Web browsing histories. Google has said it didn't realize it had been gathering that data and said it would erase the information as soon as possible.
Stanford's Mayer said in his report that privacy researchers have referred to the tension between browser makers and advertisers such as Google as a "cat-and-mouse game."
"This research result regrettably affirms that view as reality _ for, quite possibly, millions of users," Mayer wrote.
