Recruitment To Begin For Green Investment Bank Jobs

(PRWEB UK) 12 March 2012

Recruitment is set to start for up to 70 new financial jobs at the new government-backed Green Investment Bank (GIB).

It was announced last week that the banks operations would be split between two sites in London and Edinburgh, and that it is hoped to be fully operational by the coming Autumn.

The development of the bank is being led by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), with the aim of providing financial solutions for private sector investment in the green economy.

Business secretary, Vince Cable, said that decision to split the bank between the two locations would serve to open it up to wider markets. The London operation will largely deal with the fundraising aspect of the bank.

He explained, This decision will allow the UK GIB to operate effectively and achieve its mission of mobilising the additional investment needed to accelerate the UKs transition to a green economy.

Scottish secretary, Michael Moore, said that Edinburgh and London had both come out at the top of the extensive technical assessments carried out to determine the location of the new company.

By basing the GIB?s corporate HQ, asset management and administrative functions in Edinburgh and its transaction team in London, we can harness expertise across the country to deliver a strong and successful GIB for the UK, he said.

The bank will have some

David Brooks: Fiscal Cliff Blame Should Largely Go To Republicans

New York Times columnist David Brooks said Sunday that Republicans should shoulder most of the blame if lawmakers do not reach an agreement on the fiscal cliff ahead of Tuesday's deadline.

"What's happening in Washington right now is pathetic. When you think about what the revolutionary generation did, what the civil war generation did, what the World War II generation did -- we're asking not to bankrupt our children and we've got a shambolic, dysfunctional process," Brooks said during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Most of the blame still has to go to the Republicans," he continued. "They've had a brain freeze since the election. They have no strategy. They don't know what they want. They haven't decided what they want."

Brooks' comments echoed a similar assessment from President Obama, who sat down with "Meet the Press" for an interview that aired Sunday morning.

"We have been talking to the Republicans ever since the election was over. They have had trouble saying yes to a number of repeated offers," Obama said. "[S]o far, at least, Congress has not been able to get this stuff done. Not because Democrats in Congress don't want to go ahead and cooperate, but because I think it's been very hard for Speaker Boehner and Republican Leader McConnell to accept the fact that taxes on the wealthiest Americans should go up a little bit, as part of an overall deficit reduction package."

But Brooks also reserved some of his criticism for the president, stating that Obama has at times "governed like a visitor from a morally superior civilization," appearing to undermine the very point he'd made about the value of the high moral fiber of previous generations just seconds earlier.

"He comes in here and he'll talk to [John] Boehner, he won't talk to the other Republicans," Brooks said. "He hasn't built the trust. Boehner actually made a pretty serious concession, $800 billion in tax revenues, probably willing to go up on rates. But the trust wasn't there. If the president wants to get stuff done over the next four years, it's got to be about a lot more than just making the intellectual concessions."

A better pencil sharpener? Inventor dreams of erasing life's annoyances

14 hrs.

Long lines at amusement parks. Traffic stalled at rush hour. Cycling uphill. To most of us, these are just minor problems we face in an otherwise comfortable existence.?To Anwar Farooq, they are personal call-outs, challenges that he must answer with his own ingenuity. These days, the math?teacher and habitual?inventor is wrestling with the age-old problem of the?pencil sharpener.

"When I saw my students struggling with the regular pencil sharpener, I honestly knew that there must be an alternate approach, so I started thinking," Farooq, who teaches?at Maywood Academy,?southeast of Los Angeles, told NBC News.

That's not the first time Farooq "started thinking."

His inventions, spanning 1986 to now, may?seem whimsical at first, but on closer inspection are like early ancestors of devices in use today. There's a bike where your pedaling is boosted by an air compressor, for instance. If you replace the air compressor with an electric motor, you get today's battery-powered bikes.

There's?the Robocam, a?remote-controlled camera platform that's a precursor to telepresence robots and smartphone?videoconferencing apps alike.

For those annoying amusement park or movie theater?lines, Farooq proposes a chain of connected, moving chairs.?You take a load off, enjoy the?built-in entertainment system, and before long, it's your turn to get up and enjoy the ride or show. He calls it Waiting Is Fun.?It may seem far-fetched?... until Disney goes and installs one in Tomorrowland.

The idea Farooq seems most proud of is the?Rapid Commute. Cars traveling from the outskirts of a city?drive right onto a high-speed train, as if they were boarding a ferry boat. The train then brings them to a central location downtown, where they disembark. Next month he will be presenting it to the Transportation Research Board, an off-shoot of the non-profit?National Research Council,?at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

And then there's the?Quick N Silent pencil sharpener.?

* * *

Pencil sharpeners are, in fact, one of the few classroom technologies that have?not?experienced a radical redesign in the past century. The most common type of institutional sharpener, the hand-cranked type you can still see?mounted to a wall or the teacher's table in classrooms all over the world,?was introduced in 1904.

Sure, electric versions have been introduced, but?the cylindrical mills rotating in "planetary" fashion within?are still dominant ? despite the inconsistency of their results.

Nevertheless, when Farooq wrestled with how to modernize the?pencil sharpener, he didn't look to some?laser that could hone the tip of a pencil with micron-level precision. Instead, he found inspiration in the distant?past.

"I remembered that people carried pocket knives and they just used those to sharpen pencils quietly and efficiently."

He set to work on the new machine based on the same principles.

* * *

Farooq was always an inventor at heart, but he told us that, growing up in Pakistan, he never had a chance to exercise his creative capabilities. "Even if I had an idea, we were from the lower middle class, so we didn't have any money to do anything," he told us. "My biggest break is that I came to a country like America ??and now I can do those things I desire."

But even after moving to the U.S. in the 1970s, inventing hasn't been exactly easy for Farooq. In fact, following his dreams can at times be something of an expensive habit. "Of course it's a hardship to me and tight financially," he admitted. "My wife says, 'Why don't you take up gambling?'"

At least to him, though, the cost is worth it.?"I live for that, that excitement of finding something, of discovering something." He points out that the famed inventor Nicola Tesla died a poor man, but now they're building a Tesla?museum. Farooq doesn't expect a museum, but he does hope that his inventions will outlast him.

It may be his latest baby, the pencil sharpener,?that lives on. Even in our increasingly?digital world, Farooq feels strongly that pencil and paper, as?a medium for recording thoughts and images, won't disappear any time soon.?"Yes, it is old and unglamorous technology, but it's foolproof and works as advertised."

Its biggest asset is its low cost: "It's cheap enough to be owned by almost anyone in the world," he said.

When he finally figured out how to implement the pocket-knife method of sharpening, Farooq built a mock-up and?patented his design.

His prototype doesn't grind, like the rotary sharpeners in classrooms?worldwide. Nor does it shave around the edge, like the small twisty?single-blade sharpeners that predate the rotary type. Instead, it uses multiple blades to whittle down the edge from all sides at once. True to its name, the blades slice down the end of the pencil, exposing a sharp tip and plenty of lead in a single, silent pass.

Farooq is looking for funding to start manufacturing the device, which he has continually modified over the last few years in his spare time.?A crowd-funding attempt at?Fundageek, a website for inventors, has not produced much income. But he intends to put a more complete version of the device up for consideration on Indiegogo, a larger platform for collecting funding.

In the meantime, Farooq will keep on inventing. His own modest?website lists two things ? Personal Safety 360 and GPS Live Cam ??that he isn't ready to discuss publicly.

"When I came to this country,?I wanted to do something positive, a legacy to leave behind." Whether his inventions find widespread adoption or not, Farooq's insatiable inventor's spirit may continue to inspire the kids in his classroom ??as well as those who encounter him through his growing portfolio.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC?News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

(AP) ? Egypt's Islamist president warned against any unrest that could harm the drive to repair the country's battered economy in his first address before the newly convened upper house of parliament on Saturday, urging the opposition to work with his government.

In the nationally televised speech, Mohammed Morsi said the nation's entire efforts should be focused on "production, work, seriousness and effort," now that a new constitution came into effect this week, blaming protests and violence the last month for causing further damage to an economy already in crisis since the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi denounced those who he said were spreading panic about Egypt's economy, saying the country will "not go bankrupt" and that its banks were healthy, after a rush on dollars the past week. He presented the country's foreign currency reserves, currently at $15 billion, as up slightly from last year, though he acknowledged they were still down dramatically from around $36 billion in 2010.

Soon after Morsi's speech, the Central Bank of Egypt warned that foreign reserves were a "critical" minimum level ? that is, the minimum for meeting obligations like international debt and covering the costs of strategic imports. Currency reserves have been sliding as foreign investment and tourism dried up amid the turmoil of the uprising against Mubarak two years ago.

Citing the economy, Morsi pressed the opposition to drop its refusals to deal with his government, repeating his invitation for it to join a national dialogue he has been holding ? and adding a warning that appeared directed at the opposition not to turn to protests that might cause unrest.

All sides must "realize the needs of the moment" and work only through "mature democracy while avoiding violence," he told the 270-member Shura Council. "We condemn and reject all forms of violence by individuals, groups, institutions and even from the nation and its government. This is completely rejected."

Last month, the largely secular and liberal opposition launched a wave of protests against decrees by Morsi grabbing new powers ? since revoked ? and against the draft constitution that his Islamist allies rammed through to finalization and put to a referendum, completed a week ago. In response, Islamists also launched mass rallies, and the two sides erupted into violence several times. The worst violence came in clashes outside the presidential palace in Cairo that killed 10 people, and though it was sparked when Islamists attacked a sit-in, Morsi's allies have depicted the opposition as to blame.

Opponents fear that Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, are monopolizing rule and that the new constitution will consecrate their power. The charter allows for a stronger implementation of Islamic law, or Shariah, than in the past and provisions that could limit many civil rights and freedoms of minorities. The charter was passed by 64 percent in the referendum, though turnout was only around 33 percent.

Under the new constitution, the upper house of parliament, which normally has few powers, is now serving as the law-making body until a new legislating lower house is chosen in national elections expected within a few months. The upper house, called the Shura Council, has an overwhelming Islamist majority, mainly from Morsi's Brotherhood and the allied ultraconservative Salafis.

Morsi has depicted the national dialogue that he launched earlier this month as a compromise giving all factions a voice. The dialogue is supposed to draw up key legislation to put before parliament, including a law organizing the parliamentary elections, and decide other issues. The opposition has dismissed the dialogue initiative as disingenuous, and so far mainly Islamists are participating, along with a few small liberal parties.

Ahmed Maher, head of the activist April 6 Movement that helped engineer last year's uprising against Mubarak, said Morsi's speech offered nothing new beyond his acknowledgement of Egypt's economic woes. He also said he would not enter into talks again with the president until the Brotherhood "gives up some of their arrogance and stubbornness."

"I sat with the president four times before. There are never any clear results from the conversations," Maher said, adding that the opposition wants changes to the new constitution and a Cabinet led by a new prime minister with a clear plan.

In his speech, Morsi repeatedly said it was time to return to "production" and "work." While he listed some new economic projects such as developing the Suez Canal area and Sinai, he did not give details on an overall economic program, including how the government will tackle a crippling deficit or carry out expected changes in taxes or reductions of subsidies.

His government has requested a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund to bridge the burgeoning budget deficit. But talks have been put off for the moment after the government this month backed off plans to raise taxes on a number of products, fearing a larger backlash amid the political protests. Potential cuts in subsidies on food and fuel and plans to raise taxes are major concerns in a country where some 40 percent of the 85 million population live near or below the poverty line of surviving on $2 a day.

Standard & Poor downgraded Egypt's long-term credit rating one level this week to B-, six steps below investment grade.

"The reason (for the lower ranking) is the lack of political stability in the recent past," Morsi said.

He denounced those he said were spreading rumors that undermine the economy. "Those who talk about bankruptcy, they are the ones who are bankrupt. Egypt will never be bankrupt and will not kneel, God willing," he said to a round of applause.

The central bank announced the introduction of a new auction system for banks buying and selling U.S. dollars, urging citizens to "ration usage" of foreign currency in favor of the Egyptian pound. It urged Egyptians to avoid speculation after a rush to sell the pound for dollars over concerns of devaluation this week. The central bank has burned through billions of dollars over the past two years to prop up the pound.

Morsi appeared to chide the opposition for not working with him, saying all sides must past through the crisis together. "We all know the interests of the nation. Would any of us be happy if the nation goes bankrupt? I don't doubt anyone's intentions. But can anyone here be happy if the nation is exposed to economic weakness?"

In attendance at the session were leading national figures such as Egypt's new Coptic pope, Tawdros II, seated next to the country's top mainstream cleric, grand sheik Ahmed al-Tayeb of Cairo's Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's foremost seat of learning. The former head of the ultraconservative Salafi Nour Party and the head of the Muslim Brotherhood party were also seated front-row along with former interim prime ministers, the country's defense minister and other members of Cabinet.

"Rescue Me" singer Fontella Bass dies aged 72

(Reuters) - American soul singer Fontella Bass, who topped the R&B chart in 1965 with the song "Rescue Me," died in St. Louis. She was 72.

Bass died in hospice care on Wednesday night from complications of a heart attack she suffered three weeks ago, her daughter, Neuka Mitchell, told Reuters. Bass had also suffered from strokes in recent years.

"She's going to be missed," Mitchell said. "Her big personality. Her love for family. Her big, giving heart and her cooking."

She was known as the "queen of soul food" to her family, Mitchell said.

Bass was born into a singing family in St. Louis. Her mother, Martha Bass, was a singer in the Clara Ward Singers gospel group. Her brother, the late R&B singer David Peaston, scored a handful of hits in the 1980s and 1990s.

Bass first achieved success dueting with Bobby McClure in 1965 on songs such as "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing" and "You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone)," both of which were hits on the pop and R&B charts.

Bass' biggest hit came with "Rescue Me," which shot up the Billboard pop charts in the fall of 1965, becoming one of the most popular soul hits of all time.

"It held a special place in her heart," Mitchell said of the song. "She sang it every time she performed."

The song has been covered and sampled numerous times over the years, including by pop stars Linda Ronstadt and Cher, and more recently in 2000 by UK group Nu Generation, who remixed the song into a dance track.

Nu Generation's remix, "In Your Arms (Rescue Me)" hit the top 10 of the UK singles chart.

Bass had moderate success in later years with a gospel album in the 1990s, but was unable to emulate the popularity set by "Rescue Me."

She was married to jazz trumpeter and composer Lester Bowie. The two spent time living in Europe in the late 1960s and early 1970s before moving back to the United States.

Funeral arrangements for Bass have not been finalized. The singer is survived by her four children.

Mobile Security Issues in 2013 ? Contegix | Cloud Hosting, Managed ...

Mobile Security has become increasingly important as more businesses are utilizing tablets and smart phones to access their data. Lessons learned in 2012 will impact security in 2013 as consumers and businesses alike become more aware of possible problems.

Data Privacy

In 2012, there were several data breaches that made the news and helped raise awareness of the problem of data mining. There were changes to networks such as Facebook, Google and Instagram to help address these issues, but private companies remain a prime target for security breaches. It is important to ensure that all databases are adequately protected from malware or viruses. Unfortunately, many people use the same passwords for work and home, so if a security breach happens it can have a significant effect for consumers. Private companies need to verify their existing security addresses and the different ways their databases can be accessed. Consumer education in creating different passwords is also an essential element to reduce mobile security threats. This is an ever changing industry and new threats can be developed without notice.

More Mobile Devices

There are currently at least 4 dominant mobile devices widely available for consumers. Apple, Blackberry, Android and Microsoft all have smart phones and/or tablets available to consumers. Each of these has a different operating system with different security measures in place. The availability of multiple operating systems is likely to get worse in 2013 as new companies enter the tablet and smart phone industry. Because these devices are always connected, they have their own security issues. Whether the user is loading apps, accessing the internet or making a phone call, there is a danger of security breaches. ?Businesses should investigate the security of each system before making a choice that could significantly affect their own data.

Desktop Integration

Many tablet and smartphone users still own a laptop and will share information between devices. This means that security problems on computers can be shared with mobile devices. Businesses need to be aware of this possibility and verify that their security measures address any sharing of information between devices to avoid malware and viruses spreading.

Security problems may start in a variety of places on the internet, but eventually they all connect together. Malware and virus creators are learning how to access through new devices such as smart TV?s, game consoles and DVD players. Anything that connects to the internet is vulnerable to attack if proper security is not used. While these devices may not impact businesses directly, IT professionals need to be aware of the possibilites to ensure information is properly protected.

It is impossible to protect against everything, but as long as companies and individuals stay vigilant with regard to security policies on mobile devices, the negative effects can be greatly minimized.

McElroy has concussion, Sanchez to start for Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? Rex Ryan stepped to the podium, looked out at the cameras and opened his news conference with a warning.

"You're not going to believe this one," the New York Jets coach declared without any hint of a smile.

In what has been a bizarre season, the Jets' wacky quarterback situation took yet another twist. Greg McElroy has a concussion ? which he didn't reveal until Thursday ? and will be replaced by Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback in the season finale at Buffalo on Sunday.

"We've come to find out that Greg wasn't exactly truthful with our training staff after the game," said Ryan, who acknowledged he was "stunned" to hear the news. "He never disclosed that he had symptoms after the game to our trainers. Right now, he's being evaluated for a concussion."

McElroy, preparing to make his second NFL start in place of the benched Sanchez, was lifting weights Thursday morning and started experiencing headaches, Ryan said. McElroy went to the team's training staff and then revealed he was suffering concussion-like symptoms after being sacked 11 times in the Jets' 27-17 loss to San Diego last Sunday.

McElroy and head trainer John Mellody then went to Ryan to tell the coach the news. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano said he was "pretty silent" when he found out a few minutes after Ryan.

"It's another bump in the road here," Sparano said, "and it's something we've become a little accustomed to dealing with."

Ryan was not certain exactly when McElroy suffered the concussion, but said there was no way he would play McElroy against the Bills and the third-stringer will "definitely be out." McElroy had been listed on the injury report Wednesday with a mild abdominal strain, but was a full participant in practice and was expected to play without any issues.

"I admire his courage and everything else, but you have to be truthful and I think that's the lesson learned here with the medical staff," said Ryan, who spoke to the entire team about concussions after practice. "The fact he really wanted to play, I understand the competitive side of Greg and all that, but the most important thing is the health of the players.

"Obviously, I feel fortunate that something like this showed up without him going out there and putting himself in harm's way."

While Sanchez wouldn't comment on whether players choosing to play through head injuries is common in the NFL, Tebow acknowledged that it probably does happen around the league because of job security.

"You fight hard to earn something and you don't want to jeopardize that with an injury, for sure," said Tebow, who added that he has never been in McElroy's situation. "I think that's definitely something guys will think about."

Ryan chose to start Sanchez over Tim Tebow because the team has just two practices and a walkthrough to prepare before the game. He also cited Sanchez's success against the Bills in the season opener, when he threw three touchdown passes in the Jets' 48-28 win.

Sanchez appeared to be on his way to a solid season, but it ended up being his best game. He was benched for the first time in his four-year career after turning over the ball five times at Tennessee on Dec. 17.

"I'm excited to play, obviously," Sanchez said. "You just never want to see something like that happen to a teammate, somebody I really respect. You feel for Greg and I'll be ready to play."

Sanchez was a bit surprised when Ryan told him he'd be starting because he thought McElroy just wasn't feeling well.

"I guess I didn't expect it," Sanchez said. "I wasn't coming into today thinking he had a concussion. I never would've known."

McElroy leapfrogged Tebow on the depth chart to start against the Chargers. After finding out about McElroy's condition, Ryan spoke with both Sanchez and Tebow to tell them of his decision.

"Obviously, Tim's not happy with that, as you'd expect," Ryan said.

The news came on the heels of some tension between Ryan and Tebow last week, when the popular backup quarterback told the coach he was "disappointed" at not getting the start and wanted to play "regular quarterback." ESPN New York first reported Sunday that Tebow asked out of the wildcat, and a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that to The Associated Press. The two met again last Friday to clear the air, and Tebow reiterated that he was willing to do anything the team asked him to do.

Tebow insisted Wednesday that he did not refuse to do anything and acknowledged that Ryan might have misinterpreted what he said. Ryan said he understands that Tebow is frustrated at the situation and by not starting, but again would not disclose anything said between the two in their conversations last week.

Tebow said he didn't think Ryan's choice to play Sanchez was in any way punitive, and added that he and the coach have a "great" relationship.

"When you're a competitor, you want to play," Tebow said. "But I understood his decision and I just let him know, just like always, that I'll do whatever I can to help the team."

Tebow will be the No. 2 quarterback on Sunday at Buffalo, and could play ? but it won't be as the starter.

"Obviously, he'd like a shot at it," Ryan said, "but with the situation the way it is, it's a short window, really, to get the preparation time in and I just think it's best for our football team."

With the way the season has played out, from the quarterback controversies to the injuries suffered by key players, Ryan was asked if this is the strangest year he has ever experienced in the NFL.

"Yeah, I would say that's pretty accurate," Ryan said, laughing. "And, we've had some strange ones."

Added Tebow, chuckling: "It's been interesting."

Google Music matching explicit songs with clean ones, but contains a stopgap fix

Google Music graffiti Android

Early iTunes Match adopters will remember the unintentional bowdlerization of their music libraries: they'd listen to their scanned music collection on a second device and lose all the colorful language. As we're quickly learning, Google Music's newly added scan and match feature isn't exempt from that problem, either. Those streaming matched copies of explicit songs through the newer service are getting clean versions, with no obvious way to preserve the filth. We've reached out to Google for comment, but in the meantime, here's a potential solution -- choose the "fix incorrect match" option and Google Music will typically upload the raw tracks. Hopefully, the service will match the correct tracks by the next time we want an unfiltered experience for our ears.

New technique catalogs lymphoma-linked genetic variations

Dec. 26, 2012 ? As anyone familiar with the X-Men knows, mutants can be either very good or very bad -- or somewhere in between. The same appears true within cancer cells, which may harbor hundreds of mutations that set them apart from other cells in the body; the scientific challenge has been to figure out which mutations are culprits and which are innocent bystanders. Now, researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine have devised a novel approach to sorting them out: they generated random mutations in a gene associated with lymphoma, tested the proteins produced by the genes to see how they performed, and generated a catalog of mutants with cancer-causing potential.

"Our goal was to correlate various mutations with potential to promote lymphoma," says Joel Pomerantz, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine's Institute for Cell Engineering. For the study, to be reported in a January 2013 issue of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Pomerantz and his research team focused on the protein CARD11. CARD11 plays a key role in signaling the presence of infection, which leads infection-fighting white blood cells to grow and divide. Certain mutations can turn CARD11 permanently "on," causing out-of-control cell division that results in cancers called lymphomas, which strike about 75,000 Americans each year.

To find out which genetic mutations would increase CARD11's activity, Pomerantz and his team made copies of the CARD11 gene in a way that made random mutations likely. They then used the faulty copies to make mutant proteins, and tested the ability of those proteins to trigger the signaling reaction that is CARD11's specialty. This let the researchers figure out which mutations increased the protein's activity, and by how much -- information that can be compared to emerging data about CARD11 mutations found in human lymphomas. "We found that several of the overactive mutations we'd identified have already been found in patients," Pomerantz says.

Noting that CARD11 is part of the NF-?B signaling pathway, a target of some cancer therapies, Pomerantz says the new cataloging technique could lead to more personalized treatment. "We imagine eventually being able to correlate response to a particular therapy with a particular mutation," he says. For now, Pomerantz and his team are delving deeper into what gives the bad CARD11 mutants their special powers, looking for mechanisms to explain how certain changes increase the protein's activity.

How deadly would chemical weapons in Syria be?

Concerns that the Syrian regime would use chemical weapons are putting the spotlight on these weapons of mass destruction.

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / December 6, 2012

A view of damages on an empty street in the Aleppo district of Salaheddine, Syria, Dec. 5. Serious concerns have been raised about the Syrian regime using chemical weapons.

Serious concerns have been raised about chemical weapons in Syria as unnamed US officials on Wednesday told NBC News that Syrian forces have loaded sarin, a deadly nerve gas, into bombs that can be dropped by planes.

The officials said the bombs had not been loaded onto planes and there was not yet a decision from Syria's leader to use them.

President Obama has said the use of chemical weapons in Syria is a ?red line? that would draw the US into the war. Embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denied that he?s planning to use them, unless international forces intervene. And Syrian officials have called recent accusations a ?pretext for intervention.?

The international community is now debating if and how to respond to this latest development.

As the situation unfolds, for many unfamiliar with sarin gas there may be some question as to what it is and just how deadly it can be. Though it?s classified as a weapon of mass destruction and is extremely lethal, it is not in the same league as nuclear weapons.

?Chemical weapons are not nuclear weapons. In order to produce a lot of damage they have to be distributed very efficiently. The problem with them is that they can be very deadly and efficient if used in population centers and their effects are indiscriminate,? says Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association.

?The explosion of a single chemical shell would not necessarily be a catastrophe if it went off accidentally at one of these storage sites, but the deliberate use of one chemical shell in a population center could be very deadly,? adds Mr. Kimball.

Sarin is a colorless and odorless nerve agent that can be attached to missiles and artillery rounds and is primarily lethal when inhaled but can also penetrate skin and clothing.

It evaporates quickly, though under the right conditions it can linger for up to five days. As a result, a sarin attack requires little clean up and areas affected by sarin can be quickly reoccupied, making it a desirable weapon for military units looking to advance without destroying infrastructure and equipment.

It was first developed in Germany in 1938, but there was no known use of it as a weapon, until 1988 when Iraq used it against the Kurdish town of Halabja. The Iraqi military is also believed to have used sarin against Iran during the war between the two countries that spanned from 1980 to 1988.

Most recently, it was used by the Japanese group Aum Shinrikyo which manufactured their own form of impure sarin gas and released it on the Tokyo subway in 1995. The attack killed 12 and injured at least 5,500 people.

It?s unclear exactly how much damage would be caused were Syrian jets to drop bombs filled with sarin gas on an apartment block or populated area, but experts say the attack would likely be lethal and devastating, creating a major impact.

Winter Weather Brings Delays To DFW International Airport

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) ? The winter weather that brought snow and ice to North Texas has also brought delays to travelers at DFW International Airport.

According to airport officials, over 1,000 passengers woke up Wednesday morning after spending the night inside airport terminals. DFW personnel provided cots, blankets, toiletry kits and other comforts for overnight passengers.

The storm, which brought up to six inches of snow to some parts of North Texas, is still causing airport delays on Wednesday morning at the world?s eighth-busiest based on passenger traffic.

Though a winter weather warning expired at 9 a.m. this morning, at least 40 departing flights have already been cancelled.

According to Kent Powell with American Airlines, the airline is fully functional this morning at DFW, though some flights continue to experience delays. Extra time is required to de-ice planes and navigate icy ramps.

Travelers on Wednesday are encouraged to check their flight?s status online before heading to the airport. All roadways leading to and from the airport are clear and ready for traffic.

StartUp FASHION Building the Best Team for Your Business

New Employee On First Day At WorkThe success of your company depends on several critical factors, not the least of which are your team members. The people you select to help pursue your dream and carry out your vision have the potential to make or break your business.

So, how do you make sure you have the right people working for you?

As with any business ? start-up or experienced ? you want to make sure you hire someone who can handle the highs and lows and can produce results through times of uncertainty. Whether via word of mouth, networking, or social media platforms, start-ups, in particular, have to keep a lid on employee search costs.

The process can be daunting, but the best way to pursue building your team is to create a checklist. ?Outlining your needs will force you to think about what type of people you need working for your company and why. The more organized you are and the more detailed your criteria, the easier your search will be.

There are many do?s and don?ts that are part of the hiring process, but here are a few key details specific to start-ups that deserve consideration:

  • Placement ? someone may have a stellar resume, but that does not mean he or she can handle the pressure of a start-up. Start-ups are unique because a team member may wear many hats and must have the flexibility to juggle other roles. Individuals who have worked in more structured environments may have difficulty adjusting to this type of work atmosphere.
  • Personality ? your employees need to have the same drive and determination as you do. You?re putting the life of your business into their hands and you need to trust that your team members have the same best intentions for your company.
  • Talent ? you should think of your hiring process as though you are putting together an all-star team. Within reason, you should try to bring in the best selection of talent for your business. The typical recommendation is to hire those people whose skills you desire. Putting together a unique set of ?talent will give you the chance to set your company above and beyond the competition.
  • Compatibility- Perhaps the most important issue to consider when it comes to hiring a team is to make sure that you and those you employ enjoy working with each other. You don?t need to be best friends, but compatibility is crucial.

Keeping a flow of positive energy will put your business on the right path. There is no definitively right or wrong approach to hiring team members, but by staying true to your company?s goals and missions, you can build yourself a team destined for success.

How to set the aperture size in photography?

It can be said that setting the aperture value is a very important part in photography basic techniques. Before pressing the shutter, we must first observe the lighting conditions and shooting environments to set the reasonable aperture value according to the situation. It can help us get a clear screen, and effectively control the depth of field and show the photographers' shooting intent. In this article we will show tips for setting the aperture.

1. Large aperture will blur the background and highlight the subject

As we all know, the larger the aperture, the shallower the depth of field. So you can avoid the messy background around to affect the picture's effect, and make the focus be concentrated in the subject in the screen to highlight the subject.

2. Other factors affect the depth of field

Except the aperture size, the focal length of the lens, shooting distances and the distance between subject and background can also affect the depth of field.

Under the premise of remaining the aperture size and the shooting distance, the longer the focal length of the lens, the shallower the depth of field will be. Under the premise of remaining the focal length of the lens and aperture, the closer the shooting distance, the shallower the depth of field will be. And under the premise of remaining the aperture size, shooting distance and the focal length of the lens, farther the backgrounds away from the subject, the shallower the depth of field will be.

Therefore, setting a large aperture, using telephoto lens, close to the main subject, and away from the background are able to take more blurred background photos with shallow depth of field.

3. Using a large aperture s to avoid making screen fuzzy in shimmer handheld shooting

When shooting under low light conditions in indoor, cloudy, or evening, a common problem is the photo "fuzzy". This is because when shooting in low-light environments, it requires a longer exposure time (slower shutter speed) to obtain the desired results. Once the shutter speed is lower than the handheld safe speed, the hand shaking can cause blurred pictures. In this case, using a large aperture is able to enhance the photosensitive component unit of time and then enhancing the shutter speed to avoid blur.

Using the large aperture to enhance the shutter speed is not only used in low-light environments, it can often be used in sunny days especially for shooting dynamic subjects.

Car thieves offer a reprieve on Christmas Day

3 hrs.

The holidays may be a time to spread joy, but be careful not to let a car thief sour your good cheer.

A new study ranks the final week of the year as one of the riskiest when it comes to getting your car stolen. But the good news is that even the bad guys seem to take a break on Christmas Day.

Among 11 major holidays (OK, an even dozen if you include Groundhog Day), the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICD) reveals Christmas landed last in terms of the total number of vehicles stolen in the U.S. in 2011, at 1,347.?

In fact, Christmas had the lowest rate of car theft of any day in 2011, holiday or not.? Groundhog Day, at 1,491, was second-lowest holiday.

Apparently, all those tricksters were helping themselves to some expensive treats on Halloween, which ranked No. 1 on the list with 2,328 vehicles stolen.

Close behind, however, was New Year?s Day, at 2,286, followed by Memorial Day, at 2,005, and Labor Day, at 1,977.

But the study can be a bit misleading.? Fifth on the list is New Year?s Eve, with 1,947 stolen vehicles.? So, if you consider the build-up to the dropping ball and the day of hangovers to follow as one continuous holiday, suddenly New Year?s takes the lead by a wide margin, at 4,233.

And, by the same logic, Christmas suddenly becomes a much less?bucolic holiday.? The folks at the NICD rank Christmas Eve ninth among the 11 major holidays, with a reported 1,797 vehicles stolen in 2011. ?If you combine them together, the total suddenly jumps to 3,144, just behind New Year?s.

Why might there be more thefts on Christmas Eve? ?It may be that thieves?expect to find more gifts in the cars they steal as folks head over to visit family and friends ? or race to buy last-minute gifts.

?Although the nation has enjoyed declining vehicle thefts for eight consecutive years, the risk from vehicle theft is still very real. There is always a black market for items obtained by theft, and vehicles remain popular theft targets,? says the new holiday report.

How do the holidays stack up from a theft perspective? Here?s the list:

1. Halloween (2,328)

2. New Year?s Day (2,286)

3. Memorial Day (2,005)

4. Labor Day (1,977)

5. New Year?s Eve (1,947)

6. Valentine?s Day (1,895)

7. Independence Day (1,862)

8. President?s Day (1,830)

9. Christmas Eve (1,797)

10. Thanksgiving (1,526)?

11. Groundhog Day (1,491)?

12. Christmas Day (1,347)

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI granted his former butler a Christmas pardon Saturday, forgiving him in person during a jailhouse meeting for stealing and leaking his private papers in one of the gravest Vatican security breaches in recent times.

After the 15-minute meeting, Paolo Gabriele was freed and returned to his Vatican City apartment where he lives with his wife and three children. The Vatican said he couldn't continue living or working in the Vatican, but said it would find him housing and a job elsewhere soon.

"This is a paternal gesture toward someone with whom the pope for many years shared daily life," according to a statement from the Vatican secretariat of state.

The pardon closes a painful and embarrassing chapter for the Vatican, capping a sensational, Hollywood-like scandal that exposed power struggles, intrigue and allegations of corruption and homosexual liaisons in the highest levels of the Catholic Church.

Gabriele, 46, was arrested May 23 after Vatican police found what they called an "enormous" stash of papal documents in his Vatican City apartment. He was convicted of aggravated theft by a Vatican tribunal on Oct. 6 and has been serving his 18-month sentence in the Vatican police barracks.

He told Vatican investigators he gave the documents to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi because he thought the 85-year-old pope wasn't being informed of the "evil and corruption" in the Vatican and thought that exposing it publicly would put the church back on the right track.

During the trial, Gabriele testified that he loved the pope "as a son loves his father" and said he never meant to hurt the pontiff or the church. A photograph taken during the meeting Saturday ? the first between Benedict and his once trusted butler since his arrest ? showed Gabriele dressed in his typical dark gray suit, smiling.

The publication of the leaked documents, first on Italian television then in Nuzzi's book "His Holiness: Pope Benedict XVI's Secret Papers" convulsed the Vatican all year, a devastating betrayal of the pope from within his papal family that exposed the unseemly side of the Catholic Church's governance.

The papal pardon had been widely expected before Christmas, and the jailhouse meeting Benedict used to personally deliver it recalled the image of Pope John Paul II visiting Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turkish gunman who shot him in 1981, while he served his sentence in an Italian prison.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the meeting was "intense" and "personal" and said that during it Benedict "communicated to him in person that he had accepted his request for pardon, commuting his sentence."

Lombardi said the Vatican hoped the Benedict's pardon and Gabriele's freedom would allow the Holy See to return to work "in an atmosphere of serenity."

None of the leaked documents threatened the papacy. Most were of interest only to Italians, as they concerned relations between Italy and the Vatican and a few local scandals and personalities. Their main aim appeared to be to discredit Benedict's trusted No. 2, the secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

Vatican officials have said the theft, though, shattered the confidentiality that typically governs correspondence with the pope. Cardinals, bishops and everyday laymen write to him about spiritual and practical matters assuming that their words will be treated with the discretion for which the Holy See is known.

As a result, the leaks prompted a remarkable reaction, with the pope naming a commission of three cardinals to investigate alongside Vatican prosecutors. Italian news reports have said new security measures and personnel checks have been put in place to prevent a repeat offense.

Gabriele insisted he acted alone, with no accomplices, but it remains an open question whether any other heads will roll. Technically the criminal investigation remains open, and few in the Vatican believe Gabriele could have construed such a plot without at least the endorsement if not the outright help of others. But Lombardi said he had no new information to release about any new investigative leads, saying the pardon "closed a sad and painful chapter" for the Holy See.

Nuzzi, who has supported Gabriele as a hero for having exposed corruption in the Vatican, tweeted Saturday that it appeared the butler was thrilled to speak with the pope and go home. "Unending joy for him, but the problems of the curia and power remain," he wrote, referring to the Vatican bureaucracy.

A Vatican computer expert, Claudio Sciarpelletti, was convicted Nov. 10 of aiding and abetting Gabriele by changing his testimony to Vatican investigators about the origins of an envelope with Gabriele's name on it that was found in his desk. His two-month sentence was suspended. Lombardi said a pardon was expected for him as well. He recently returned to work in the Vatican.

Benedict met this past week with the cardinals who investigated the origins of the leaks, but it wasn't known if they provided him with any further updates or were merely meeting ahead of the expected pardon for Gabriele.

As supreme executive, legislator and judge in Vatican City, the pope had the power to pardon Gabriele at any time. The only question was when.
