Mississippi man makes court appearance in ricin case

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) ? A Mississippi man appeared briefly in court Monday on a charge that he made a deadly poison that was sent in letters to President Barack Obama, a senator and a judge.

James Everett Dutschke was brought to federal court in Oxford wearing an orange jumpsuit with his hands shackled. The 41-year-old suspect said little during the brief hearing other than to answer the judge's questions about whether he understood the charges against him. He said he did.

Dutschke's arrest early Saturday on a charge of making and possessing ricin capped a week in which investigators initially zeroed in on a rival of Dutschke's, then decided they had the wrong man. Dutschke has denied involvement in the mailing of the letters, saying he's a patriot with no grudges against anyone.

The judge ordered Dutschke to remain jailed until a preliminary and detention hearing scheduled for Thursday. More details are likely to emerge at that hearing, when prosecutors have to show they have enough evidence to hold him.

An attorney from the public defender's office appointed to represent Dutschke declined to comment after Monday's hearing. Another attorney who had been representing Dutschke, Lori Nail Basham, no longer is.

Dutschke's house, business and vehicles in Tupelo, Miss., were searched last week, often by crews in hazardous materials suits, and he had been under surveillance.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted. A news release from federal authorities said Dutschke (pronounced DUHS'-kee) was charged with "knowingly developing, producing, stockpiling, transferring, acquiring, retaining and possessing a biological agent, toxin and delivery system, for use as a weapon, to wit: ricin."

He already had legal problems. Earlier this month, he pleaded not guilty in state court to two child molestation charges involving three girls younger than 16. He also was appealing a conviction on a different charge of indecent exposure. He told The Associated Press last week that his lawyer told him not to comment on those cases.

The letters, which tests showed were tainted with ricin, were sent April 8 to Obama, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and Mississippi judge Sadie Holland.

The first suspect accused by the FBI was Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, an Elvis impersonator. He was arrested on April 17 at his Corinth, Miss., home, but the charges were dropped six days later and Curtis, who says he was framed, was released from jail.

The focus then turned to Dutschke, who has ties to the former suspect and the judge. Earlier in the week, as investigators searched his primary residence in Tupelo, Dutschke told the AP, "I don't know how much more of this I can take."

"I'm a patriotic American. I don't have any grudges against anybody. ... I did not send the letters," Dutschke said.

Curtis' attorney, Christi McCoy, said Saturday: "We are relieved but also saddened. This crime is nothing short of diabolical. I have seen a lot of meanness in the past two decades, but this stops me in my tracks."

Some of the language in the letters was similar to posts on Curtis' Facebook page and they were signed, "I am KC and I approve this message." Curtis often used a similar online signoff.

Dutschke and Curtis were acquainted. Curtis said they had talked about possibly publishing a book on a conspiracy that Curtis insists he has uncovered to sell body parts on a black market. But he said they later had a feud.

Curtis' attorneys have said they believe their client was set up. An FBI agent testified that no evidence of ricin was found in searches of Curtis' home. Curtis attorney Hal Neilson said the defense gave authorities a list of people who may have had a reason to hurt Curtis and Dutschke's came up.

Judge Holland also is a common link between the two men, and both know Wicker.

Holland was the presiding judge in a 2004 case in which Curtis was accused of assaulting a Tupelo attorney a year earlier. Holland sentenced him to six months in the county jail. He served only part of the sentence, according to his brother.

Holland's family has had political skirmishes with Dutschke. Her son, Steve Holland, a Democratic state representative, said he thinks his mother's only encounter with Dutschke was at a rally in the town of Verona in 2007, when Dutschke ran as a Republican against Steve Holland.

Holland said his mother confronted Dutschke after he made a derogatory speech about the Holland family. She demanded that he apologize, which Holland says he did.

Dutschke said Steve Holland exaggerated the incident, and that he has no problem with Sadie Holland. "Everybody loves Sadie, including me," he said.

LG Revolution gets bloat-removing OTA update

LG Revolution

Updates, patches, and bug fixes are included in version VS910ZVB

Many of Verizon's recent OTA updates have included the removal of pre-installed applications, commonly referred to as 'bloatware.' The LG Revolution's latest update (SW Version VS910ZVB) includes one of the longest lists of apps being removed from a Verizon Android device:

  • Mobile IM
  • Rockband
  • Bitbop
  • Verizon Apps
  • Blockbuster
  • Rhapsody
  • VCAST Music
  • Verizon Video

A few Android security patches are included in the update as well, which is always good see -- especially since it is very possible that the Revolution will not get a newer version of Android from Verizon. The VZW Family locator app has been updated and now has working GPS, and Google Maps Services has been updated as well. A bug involving large file sizes on the network also gets a fix.

As always, help a fellow Revolution owner out by posting in the comments when you start seeing this update going live.

Japan factory output seen up for fourth straight month, recovery slow

By Stanley White

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's industrial production is expected to have risen for a fourth consecutive month in March albeit at a modest pace, a Reuters survey showed, in a sign that factory output is recovering slowly as exports struggle to gain momentum.

The median forecast was for a 0.4 percent rise from the previous month, which would follow a 0.6 percent increase in February and a 0.3 percent rise in January. The data are due on Tuesday at 8:50 a.m. (Monday at 1950 EST).

The figures are expected to show that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's push to correct excessive yen strength and end years of stubborn deflation with a policy prescription dubbed "Abenomics" has yet to produce a significant increase in exports and factory output.

"It's difficult to expect a firm rebound in output without a turnaround in exports," economists at Mitsubishi UFJ Research & Consulting said in their forecast.

"The effects of 'Abenomics' cannot be seen yet in the real economy."

"Abenomics" combine fiscal stimulus spending with aggressive monetary expansion and a promise of pro-growth reforms in a gamble to end 15 years of deflation and lackluster economic growth.

The policy mix has so far driven the yen to a four-year low against the dollar and sparked a 50 percent rally in Japanese share prices from November, which has helped buoy consumer sentiment.

However, economists say it will still take some time before exports start to pick up, which is necessary to spur capital expenditure and shift economic growth into a higher gear.

The data from the ministry of economy and trade also contain manufacturers' forecasts for output in April and May.

Last month, manufacturers said they expected output to rise 0.6 percent in April.

Separate data on private consumption and the labor market are expected to paint a more positive picture as an improvement in consumer sentiment and rising stock prices encourage more people to spend.

Wage-earners' household spending is seen up 1.8 percent in March from a year earlier, the Reuters poll showed, which would mark the fastest pace of growth since May last year.

The unemployment rate is expected to have held steady at 4.3 percent in March, while the jobs-applicants ratio is forecast to have risen to 0.86 in March, matching the level seen in August 2008.

The ministry of internal affairs and the labor ministry will release the data on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (Monday at 2330 GMT).

Retail sales figures also due on Tuesday are expected to show a 0.6 percent rise in March from a year earlier, the first gain in two months, according the median estimate from the poll.

Major work remains six months after Sandy

>>> here in the northeast, it was six months ago tomorrow that hurricane sandy swept through the region. since the storm more than half million people have registered for assistance from the federal government . nbc's stephanie gosk is in seaside heights on the jersey shore tonight with an update for us. stephanie .

>> reporter: good evening, lester. i'm standing in the middle of what will be the new boardwalk for seaside heights . mayor tells us that it will be ready an open before memorial day but that can't be said for the rest of the jersey shore where progress is definitely mixed. there are homes along the jersey shore that look like they haven't been touched since sandy hit. a beach house swept into the bay by the storm still sits there. last november, we saw homeowners making an emotional return to the beach.

>> it is devastating. devastating. i don't know what else to say.

>> reporter: today, there was virtually no one there and it looked exactly the same. lack of money and battles with insurance companies are slowing down the recovery.

>> there was a fence here --

>> reporter: ruth, a full-time resident, lives a little further south where work is being done, but it is slow going.

>> at first everybody was yeah, yeah, rebuild. but i think now everybody's just tired. we're just exhausted.

>> reporter: but on a warm sunday in april, there is a hint of what summer normally promises, and some brisk business at bakin' bagels, reopened just a couple of weeks ago. you guys make a good bagel?

>> a great bagel!

>> reporter: carol barr is one of the tens of thousands of people in new jersey and new york who are still displaced. her house destroyed, she's renting the apartment above the shop.

>> 98% of my street, the houses are gutted. we're not doing anything yet. very sad.

>> reporter: after almost complete devastation, progress is measured one board at a time, especially in seaside heights .

>> so many people depend on this boardwalk.

>> reporter: for the mayor, rebuilding the boardwalk quickly wasn't just good business.

>> we're putting this pga together again for all the people that have been here, have all those wonderful memories of coming here and all those new memories that are going to be formed.

>> reporter: restore the shore is a mantra heard everywhere. scott designed the t-shirts donating $500,000 from his sales to help rebuild.

>> nobody's just going to give up now. we see the challenge but they're getting through it and we'll be open for the summer.

>> reporter: the roller coaster here at seaside heights has been a symbol of sandy's destruction from the very beginning. but when the weather conditions are right, construction workers are going to tear it down and cart it out of here. right now it is a health hazard and the priority is getting this beach open for the summer. lester?

>> stephanie gosk on the jersey shore . stephanie , we want to remind folks, brian williams will have much more on sandy six months later tomorrow right here on "nbc nightly news."

Attracting More Web Site Visitors With New Approaches ? vcdave

Mashable predicted that Responsive Web Design would be 2013?s trend for many websites. On the other hand, community-based approaches, or shall we say ?social networking?, has become the main focus of many sites, business or otherwise, to attract viewers into their online pages. Facebook is on the verge of re-designing their main user page, their News Feeds, to be exact, to be more adept when being accessed via smartphones or tablets. So what?s your move for your own online presence?

Online Communities
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and even social blogs like Tumblr have made it all too clear that making audiences involved and appreciated will attract others via referral or curiosity. Social networking has become an essential when one is considering to be prominently known in the World Wide Web, whether you?re just tweeting, posting an Instagram photo of your food, looking for online opponents or team-ups for a round of poker or WoW, or wanting to know why someone blogged about flying kites. Even if you?re into popular activities like online gaming, fashion or sports, the mere fact that the trend is overpopulated with ?expert? websites means having followers involved interactively in your website may just give you an edge above the competition. Take online gaming leader partypoker for example. Their website has adapted a community-centric approach, relying on their users? trust towards them, providing them with secure playing environments as well as up-to-date information about poker competitions, poker players and other related information. The poker site not only makes itself available through social media channels, it also makes sure that it provides easy access client support online, making it more approachable and interactive, thus attracting more users.

Responsive Web Design
Going back to social media giant Facebook, the new upcoming change has been headlined as ?Goodbye Clutter. Hello bright, beautiful stories.? While still maintaining its community-based social networking forte, it has been under development to make the interface uniform in any type of viewing platform, whether you?re using a laptop, your iPhone or iPad, or any of your chosen Android gadget. Other than focusing on a uniform, streamlined look, it is also re-emphasizing the design to focus on the user?s actions, and not just what they did on Facebook. As defined by Ethan Marcotte in his article in AListApart.com, ?Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience?easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling?across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).?

It may sound overwhelming but mind you, despite Facebook being a trendsetter in the internet game, it was not the first one to transition to RWD despite being forerunners of community-based approaches. Time, Harvard University, Mashable and even quaint small business like Tattly have already transitioned to RWD making access smoother whatever gadget you?re using. Then again, such mentioned approaches are still up to you and will depend on factors that you consider important in getting attention from internet users. Research more and then decide. It?s your call.

Mssing Brown student's body found in Providence River

By Richard Weizel

BOSTON (Reuters) - A body found floating in the Providence River was that of a 22-year-old Brown University student who had been missing for more than a month, Rhode Island officials confirmed on Thursday.

The body of Sunil Tripathi, who had been missing since March 16, had been found by the university's men's crew team late on Tuesday.

"We have been able to conclusively determine the body is that of Sunil Tripathi, but will not be able to determine the cause of death for several months," said Dara Chadwick, a spokeswoman for the Rhode Island Department of Health.

The case received national media attention after social media websites last week lit up with a false rumor that Tripathi, who was on an approved leave from Brown, was one of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.

The actual suspects have been identified as brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

While Tripathi's family blasted those reports last week, they posted a statement of thanks on Thursday on a special website which had been set up to help find the missing student.

"As we carry indescribable grief, we also feel incredible gratitude," the family said. "To each one of you - from your hometown to many distant lands - we extend our thanks for the words of encouragement, for your thoughts, for your prayers and for the love you have generously shared."

Brown University President Christina Paxson said on Thursday: "We extend our deepest condolences to Sunil's family for their loss and for the immeasurable pain they have endured during this period."

The university plans a memorial service for Tripathi on Saturday afternoon.

Japan to allow airlines to resume 787 flights

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's transport minister said Friday the government is poised to allow Japanese airlines to resume flying grounded Boeing 787s once they complete installation of systems to reduce fire risk in problematic lithium ion batteries.

The approval could come as early as Friday evening following an expected formal safety order from the U.S. federal regulators, Transport Minister Akihiro Ohta said in a statement on the ministry's website.

The 50 Dreamliner jets in service worldwide were grounded in mid-January after incidents with smoldering batteries occurred aboard two different planes.

The groundings have led to hundreds of canceled flights and big revenue losses.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration posted a safety order online Thursday allowing 787 flights to resume once the batteries are replaced with a revamped system that manufacturer Boeing Co. says sharply reduces the risk of fire.

Japan's two biggest airlines began installing revamped lithium ion batteries over the past week. All Nippon Airways owns 17 of the jets and Japan Airlines has seven.

They declined to comment on when their 787 flights might resume.

WikiLeaks suspect won't be SF Pride parade marshal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Racing to stanch a flow of criticism, the president of San Francisco's annual gay pride celebration said Friday that the U.S. Army private charged in a massive leak of U.S. secrets to the WikiLeaks website will not be an honorary grand marshal after all.

SF Pride Board President Lisa Williams said in a statement that an employee of the organization had prematurely notified imprisoned intelligence specialist Bradley Manning this week that he had been selected for the distinction, which recognizes about a dozen celebrities, politicians and community organizations each year for their contributions to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.

"That was an error, and that person has been disciplined. He does not now, nor did he at that time, speak for SF Pride," Williams said.

A committee of former San Francisco Pride grand marshals did select the 25-year-old Manning, who is openly gay, for the honor, but the Pride Board decided his nomination would be a mistake, Williams said.

Manning's lawyers have argued that his experience as a soldier before the repeal of the U.S. military's ban on gay service played an important role in his decision to pass hundreds of thousands of sensitive items to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks.

"In point of fact, less than 15 people actually cast votes for Bradley Manning," Williams said. "However, as an organization with a responsibility to serve the broader community, SF Pride repudiates this vote."

While the event's grand marshals are typically celebrated as they wave from convertibles during a downtown San Francisco parade, naming Manning as one was destined to be a symbolic gesture. He is in custody at a military prison in Kansas while he awaits court-martial and would have been unable to attend the June 30 parade.

Earlier Friday, Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst who in 1971 leaked the classified information about the Vietnam War that became known as the Pentagon Papers, had agreed to participate in the San Francisco parade on Manning's behalf, said Rainey Reitman, a member of the Bradley Manning Support Network who had cheered the short-lived recognition.

"I and many other LGBT Manning supporters are deeply disappointed by this sudden change in position on the part of the committee," Reitman said. "Bradley is a gay American hero who sacrificed a great deal so we could learn the truth about our government, and he was fairly elected to serve as grand marshal in the parade."

Contingents of Manning supporters have marched in past pride parades, and will do so again this year in San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego and other cities, she said.

But other gay rights activists were less enthusiastic about celebrating Manning, arguing that he should not be honored either as an individual or as a representative of the gay rights movement.

"Manning's blatant disregard for the safety of our service members and the security of our nation should not be praised," said Stephen Peters, president of American Military Partners Association. The group, which advocates for same-sex military families, had called on the Pride Committee to rescind the invitation.

"No community of such a strong and resilient people should be represented by the treacherous acts that define Bradley Manning," Peters said.

Movie review: Weak execution overwhelms message of 'Disconnect ...

This film image released by LD Entertainment shows Alexander Skarsg?rd, left, and Paula Patton in a scene from "Disconnect." (AP Photo/LD Entertainment)

It?s technology vs. hugs in "Disconnect," a heavy-handed compendium of interlocking stories about the perils of our wired society.

Jason Bateman plays Rich, a lawyer who?s too attached to his work email to notice his moody son Ben (Jonah Bobo) has taken up an online romance ? not knowing that the "girl" is actually two pranking classmates. One of the classmates, Jason (Colin Ford), is the son of Mike (Frank Grillo), a tech-savvy private detective who investigates when identity thieves wipe out the bank accounts of a struggling couple, Derek (Alexander Skarsgard) and Cindy (Paula Patton). One of Rich?s clients is a TV station where reporter Nina (Andrea Riseborough) has befriended Kyle (Max Thieriot), a hustler working for a sex-for-money website.

?Disconnect?

Opens Friday, April 26, at the Broadway Centre Cinemas and Century 16 (South Salt Lake); rated R for sexual content, some graphic nudity, language, violence and drug use - some involving teens; 115 minutes.

Director Henry Alex Rubin, a documentarian making his feature debut, makes an earnest attempt to illustrate the ways technology has alienated us from human interaction. But writer Andrew Stern?s hamfisted homilies, and the creaky devices linking the characters to each other, swallow up the good intentions with weak dialogue and plotting.

President George W. Bush Gets a Second, Mostly Favorable Look

With the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas, some are starting to take a second look at the 43rd president of the United States. The re-evaluation depends on who is doing it.

Former staffers laud the former president

Understandably, many of the people who worked for Bush have fond memories of their former boss. Dana Perino, now an analyst at Fox News but then a White House press secretary, offers a series of personal vignettes that she feels reveals the character of the man. Karl Rove, who also works for Fox News and was Bush's chief political adviser, suggests that the former president's moral clarity defined his administration. He mentions 9/11, the effort to combat AIDS in Africa, the attempt to reform social security and the Iraq War as accomplishments in his favor.

A more jaundiced view from the media

Jill Lawrence, writing for the National Journal, suggests that most historians still regard the Bush administration as a failure with two-thirds maintaining that he has little chance of improving that evaluation. However, she does admit that there is precedence for presidents, initially thought ill of, getting a good second look as the passage of time provides a certain perspective. Both Truman and Eisenhower are now thought to have been, on the whole, pretty good presidents, something they were not when they left office.

Bush takes a look at himself

Bush himself took a candid look at his own administration in his memoir "Decision Points," in which he eschewed the usual approach to such accounts. He related the most important decisions of his life, most of which took place during his presidency, and evaluated not only the successes, but failures and attempted to explain the reasons why.

The people take a second look

The Christian Science Monitor relates that a Washington Post/ABC News Poll now suggests that 47 percent of the American people approve of how President Bush performed during his eight years in office, remarkable when one considers that he left office with a 23 percent approval rating. One explanation may be that, Katrina and Iraq aside, Bush rallied the nation after 9/11 and mostly presided over a period of relative prosperity. Whatever the media and the rest of the chattering class have to say, many people seem to be responding to the famous poster that shows a smiling Bush with a caption that reads, "Miss me yet?" with a decided "yes."

SKorea: We'll take 'grave measure' if NKorea rejects talks

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea on Thursday warned of an unspecified "grave measure" if North Korea rejects a call for talks on a jointly run factory park that has been closed for nearly a month.

In a televised briefing with reporters, Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk refused to describe what Seoul would do if Pyongyang doesn't respond by a deadline Friday to a demand for formal working-level talks on the industrial complex just over the heavily armed border in the North Korean town of Kaesong.

But Seoul may be signaling it will pull out its remaining workers from the factory across the border in Kaesong. That could lead to the end of a complex considered the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean cooperation.

As animosity rose between the Koreas early this month, North Korea barred South Koreans from crossing the border and entering the factory. It later suspended operations and withdrew the 53,000 North Korean workers who manned assembly lines there. Pyongyang hasn't forced South Koreans to leave and about 175 are still there.

The factory has operated with South Korean know-how and technology and cheap labor from North Korea since 2004. It is a hold-over from an era that saw the Koreas try to cooperate through various projects.

For several weeks, until recently, North Korea issued a steady stream of criticism and threats aimed at Seoul and Washington, expressing anger over ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills that the North calls invasion preparations and U.N. sanctions over its February nuclear test. Pyongyang has recently eased its rhetoric, but tensions between the rivals are still high.

As Some South Korean businesses have been quietly mulling giving up on Kaesong altogether.

"Our people are suffering serious difficulties due to the shortage of food and medicines and our companies are suffering big damages and pains," Kim said.

To resolve deadlocked operations at Kaesong, Kim said North Korea should first allow some South Koreans to cross the border to hand over food and medicine to the remaining managers at Kaesong.

South Korea on Wednesday proposed talks between the head of a South Korean management office at Kaesong and the North's General Bureau for Central Guidance to the Development of the Special Zone, but the North rebuffed the offer, Kim said.

"It's very regrettable for North Korea to reject (taking) the minimum humanitarian measures for our workers at the Kaesong industrial complex," he said.

The NYPD Is Planning a Simulated Chemical Attack For New York Subways

A subway-borne chemical attack is one of those theoreticals that require the willful ignorance of regular passengers—for most of us, it's just better not to think about it. Not so for the NYPD, which yesterday announced a plan to test how a chemical or radiological attack would spread through the city's 200-odd miles of subway, by pumping an invisible gas through the system this summer. Blushing Brides honour Stones' music, fans' wallets - Montreal Gazette

MONTREAL - There is a rather large price discrepancy between the Blushing Brides show at Club Soda on Friday night and the Rolling Stones concert on Grand Prix Sunday at the Bell Centre.

The Brides, who have been a Stones cover band for 35 years, are charging $12.50. (Even better, a limited number of free tickets was available online; the allotment has sold out.)

Conversely, ticket prices for the June 9 show with Mick and the boys range from $168 to $635, plus service fees.

Brides lead singer and harmonica player Maurice Raymond is very much in awe of the Stones? business acumen. ?These guys are still selling out arenas, and at such ridiculously high prices,? the Montreal native marvels. ?I never would?ve believed that at 70 years old they would still be doing this.?

The Brides proudly bill themselves as ?the world?s most dangerous tribute to the Rolling Stones.? The band has spent the last 3? decades setting tongues wagging with their accurate homage to the London b(r)and.

Raymond, 55, shares more than a passing similarity with the Stones? frontman. From the second he struts on stage, he oozes a cocksure enthusiasm that reminds the concertgoer of the Stones in their younger, bad-boy days.

?What we?ve done,? says Raymond, ?is capture and try to stay true to the 1972-73 Exile on Main Street Stones tours in our musical approach. This gives us the ability to do more experimenting and interpreting.?

While many others try to do note-for-note covers of a band?s songs, Raymond says the Brides try to delve a little deeper. He says a fan who comes to a Brides show can expect high-energy versions of many of the big hits, as well as some medleys and B-sides that you probably won?t hear at an arena or stadium Stones show.

Raymond relishes the unpredictable nature of a Blushing Brides concert. ?I don?t know what?s really going to happen by the end of the night. There?s a certain beauty to that, and it?s something the crowd feeds off.?

It?s also what separates the Brides from their rock ?n? roll idols.

?The Stones have to stick more to a formula,? says Raymond. ?When you go to a Stones show, you know exactly what you?re going to get. You buy a T-shirt, sit in your seat, and see a show that you know will end at a certain time. The Brides still have the luxury of not having to adhere to a real structure. We just open it up and let it happen.

?We could screw it up, but that?s part of the thrill. Every show, I wonder: ?Are we going to pull this off? I know we?re going to try.? I don?t think you see that at a Stones show nowadays. I think the Stones are more constrained. Don?t get me wrong ? I?m not trying to slag them. They have affected everything in my life in some shape or form. But we get to do something that they don?t get to do.?

Along with Raymond, the Brides include rhythm guitarist and co-founder Paul Martin, lead guitarist James Green, drummer Sascha Tukatsch and bassist Matt Greenberg. The band was founded in Montreal, and Raymond and Green still live here.

?Paul came up to me in 1978, shook my hand and said, ?I want to make a band with you.? Thirty-five years later, we?re still playing together.?

2nd Miss. man investigated in ricin case

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) ? A second Mississippi man investigated in connection to ricin-laced letters sent to the president and a U.S. senator said Wednesday that investigators "ripped" through his house during an hours-long search the previous day after charges were dropped against another man in the case.

No investigators appeared to be at the Tupelo home Wednesday morning, and Everett Dutschke said he'd gone to a friend's house to rest. Piles of items could be seen all over the floor through the window. The home was searched Tuesday by dozens of officials, some in hazmat suits, from early in the afternoon until about 11 p.m. CDT. Officials declined to comment on what they had found or on the next phase of the investigation.

At one point, two FBI agents and two members of the state's chemical response team left Dutschke's property and began combing through ditches, culverts and woods about a block away from his house in the neighborhood of single-family detached homes.

Dutschke (DUHST'-kee), who spoke with The Associated Press by telephone during the search, said his house was also searched last week. He said he and his wife had gone to a friend's Wednesday because they didn't feel safe at their home.

"They ripped everything out of the house," he said Wednesday morning, adding: "I haven't slept at all."

On Wednesday, dozens of investigators were searching at a small retail space where neighboring business owners said Dutschke used to operate a martial arts studio. Officers in hazardous materials suits were seen going in and out of the building. No officers at the scene would comment on what they were doing.

No charges have been filed against Dutschke and he hasn't been arrested. Both he and Paul Kevin Curtis, who had faced charges in the case, say they have no idea how to make the poisonous ricin and had nothing to do with sending the letters to President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and Mississippi county judge Sadie Holland.

Curtis, a 45-year-old celebrity impersonator, has maintained his innocence since his arrest.

Referring to investigators' questions, Curtis said after he was released from custody Tuesday afternoon, "I thought they said rice and I said, 'I don't even eat rice.' ... I respect President Obama. I love my country and would never do anything to pose a threat to him or any other U.S. official."

Curtis is in custody under the suspicion of sending letters covered in ricin to the U.S. President Barack Obama and U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss. (AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis) less? A one-sentence document filed by federal prosecutors said charges against Curtis were dropped, but left open the possibility they could be reinstated if authorities found more to prove their case. Prosecutors were not immediately available for comment, but the document said the ongoing investigation had revealed new information. It did not elaborate.

Dutschke and Judge Holland know each other: In 2007, he lost his Republican bid for a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives to Holland's son, Democratic state Rep. Steve Holland, who was the incumbent.

Steve Holland previously said that during a political rally in the small town of Verona in 2007, Dutschke gave a speech disparaging the Holland family, including him, his mother and his wife.

Holland said his mother, who spoke just after Dutschke at the rally, called him back on the stage and said, "You're not going to disparage me. Now, you apologize to me."

Holland said Dutschke returned to the stage and at Judge Holland's instruction, got down on his knees and apologized, but Dutschke disputed that Tuesday.

"That's just Steve Holland being Steve Holland," he said, adding that he did not get down on his knees and apologize for anything. "He's a bit grandiose about the way he describes things."

Since Curtis' arrest at his Corinth, Miss., home on April 17, his attorneys have said their client didn't do it and suggested he was framed. An FBI agent testified in court this week that no evidence of ricin was found in searches of Curtis' home.

The dismissal is the latest twist in a case that has been strange from the beginning and rattled the country during the same week as the Boston Marathon bombing and a fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas.

Dutschke and Curtis are no strangers to each other. Dutschke said the two had a disagreement and the last contact they had was in 2010. Dutschke said he threatened to sue Curtis for saying he was a member of Mensa, a group for people with high IQs.

Hal Neilson, an attorney for Curtis, said the defense gave authorities a list of people who may have had a reason to hurt Curtis.

"Dutschke came up," he said. "They (prosecutors) took it and ran with it. I could not tell you if he's the man or he's not the man, but there was something there they wanted to look into."

An FBI intelligence bulletin obtained by the AP said the two ricin-laced letters addressed to Obama and Wicker said: "To see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance." Both were signed, "I am KC and I approve this message."

Curtis was already well known to Wicker because he had written to the Republican senator and other officials. Curtis also wrote a novel called "Missing Pieces," about black-market body parts he claimed to have found while working at a hospital ? a claim the hospital says is untrue. Curtis posted similar language on his Facebook page and elsewhere. The documents indicate Curtis had been distrustful of the government for years. He told the AP on Tuesday that he realizes his writings made him an easy target.

Multiple online posts under the name Kevin Curtis on various websites that could be seen by anyone refer to the conspiracy he claimed to uncover when working at a local hospital from 1998 to 2000. In one post, Curtis said he sent letters to Wicker and other politicians. He signed off: "This is Kevin Curtis & I approve this message."

Christi McCoy, another attorney for Curtis, said she doesn't know what new information prosecutors have, but said the plot to frame her client was "very, very diabolical."

Curtis, dressed after his release Tuesday in a black suit, red shirt, necktie and sunglasses, said he met Dutschke in 2005 but that for some reason Dutschke "hated" and "stalked" him. "To this day I have no clue of why he hates me."

Ricin is derived from the castor plant that makes castor oil. There is no antidote and it is at its deadliest when inhaled. It can be aerosolized, released into the air and inhaled. The Homeland Security handbook says the amount of ricin that fits on the head of a pin is enough to kill an adult if properly prepared.

Dutschke said agents asked him about Curtis, whether Dutschke would take a lie-detector test and if he had ever bought castor beans, which can be used to make the potent poison.

"I'm a patriotic American. I don't have any grudges against anybody. I did not send the letters," Dutschke said.

After charges were dropped against Curtis, he said: "I'm a little shocked."

Tuesday's events began when the third day of a preliminary and detention hearing was canceled without officials explaining the change. Within two hours, Curtis had been released.

FBI Agent Brandon Grant said in court Monday that searches last week of Curtis' vehicle and house in Corinth, found no ricin, ingredients for the poison, or devices used to make it. A search of Curtis' computers found no evidence he researched making ricin. Authorities produced no other physical evidence at the hearings tying Curtis to the letters.

All the envelopes and stamps were self-adhesive, Grant said Monday, meaning they won't yield DNA evidence. One fingerprint was found on the letter sent to a Lee County judge, but the FBI doesn't know who it belongs to, Grant said.

The experience, Curtis said, has been a nightmare for his family. He has four children ? ages, 8, 16, 18 and 20. It also has made him reflect deeply on his life.

"I've become closer to God through all this, closer with my children and I've even had some strained relationships with some family and cousins and this has brought us closer as a family," he said.

Earth's center is 1,000 degrees hotter than previously thought, synchrotron X-ray experiment shows

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Scientists have determined the temperature near the Earth's centre to be 6000 degrees Celsius, 1000 degrees hotter than in a previous experiment run 20 years ago. These measurements confirm geophysical models that the temperature difference between the solid core and the mantle above, must be at least 1500 degrees to explain why the Earth has a magnetic field. The scientists were even able to establish why the earlier experiment had produced a lower temperature figure.

The results are published on 26 April 2013 in Science.

The research team was led by Agn?s Dewaele from the French national technological research organization CEA, alongside members of the French National Center for Scientific Research CNRS and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF in Grenoble (France).

The Earth's core consists mainly of a sphere of liquid iron at temperatures above 4000 degrees and pressures of more than 1.3 million atmospheres. Under these conditions, iron is as liquid as the water in the oceans. It is only at the very centre of the Earth, where pressure and temperature rise even higher, that the liquid iron solidifies. Analysis of earthquake-triggered seismic waves passing through the Earth, tells us the thickness of the solid and liquid cores, and even how the pressure in the Earth increases with depth. However these waves do not provide information on temperature, which has an important influence on the movement of material within the liquid core and the solid mantle above. Indeed the temperature difference between the mantle and the core is the main driver of large-scale thermal movements, which together with the Earth's rotation, act like a dynamo generating the Earth's magnetic field. The temperature profile through the Earth's interior also underpins geophysical models that explain the creation and intense activity of hot-spot volcanoes like the Hawaiian Islands or La R?union.

To generate an accurate picture of the temperature profile within the Earth's centre, scientists can look at the melting point of iron at different pressures in the laboratory, using a diamond anvil cell to compress speck-sized samples to pressures of several million atmospheres, and powerful laser beams to heat them to 4000 or even 5000 degrees Celsius."In practice, many experimental challenges have to be met," explains Agn?s Dewaele from CEA, "as the iron sample has to be insulated thermally and also must not be allowed to chemically react with its environment. Even if a sample reaches the extreme temperatures and pressures at the centre of the Earth, it will only do so for a matter of seconds. In this short timeframe it is extremely difficult to determine whether it has started to melt or is still solid."

This is where X-rays come into play. "We have developed a new technique where an intense beam of X-rays from the synchrotron can probe a sample and deduce whether it is solid, liquid or partially molten within as little as a second, using a process known diffraction," says Mohamed Mezouar from the ESRF, "and this is short enough to keep temperature and pressure constant, and at the same time avoid any chemical reactions."

The scientists determined experimentally the melting point of iron up to 4800 degrees Celsius and 2.2 million atmospheres pressure, and then used an extrapolation method to determine that at 3.3 million atmospheres, the pressure at the border between liquid and solid core, the temperature would be 6000 +/- 500 degrees. This extrapolated value could slightly change if iron undergoes an unknown phase transition between the measured and the extrapolated values.

When the scientists scanned across the area of pressures and temperatures, they observed why Reinhard Boehler, then at the MPI for Chemistry in Mainz (Germany), had in 1993 published values about 1000 degrees lower. Starting at 2400 degrees, recrystallization effects appear on the surface of the iron samples, leading to dynamic changes of the solid iron's crystalline structure. The experiment twenty years ago used an optical technique to determine whether the samples were solid or molten, and it is highly probable that the observation of recrystallization at the surface was interpreted as melting.

"We are of course very satisfied that our experiment validated today's best theories on heat transfer from the Earth's core and the generation of the Earth's magnetic field. I am hopeful that in the not-so-distant future, we can reproduce in our laboratories, and investigate with synchrotron X-rays, every state of matter inside the Earth," concludes Agn?s Dewaele.

New imaging technology could reveal cellular secrets

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Researchers have married two biological imaging technologies, creating a new way to learn how good cells go bad.

"Let's say you have a large population of cells," said Corey Neu, an assistant professor in Purdue University's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. "Just one of them might metastasize or proliferate, forming a cancerous tumor. We need to understand what it is that gives rise to that one bad cell."

Such an advance makes it possible to simultaneously study the mechanical and biochemical behavior of cells, which could provide new insights into disease processes, said biomedical engineering postdoctoral fellow Charilaos "Harris" Mousoulis.

Being able to study a cell's internal workings in fine detail would likely yield insights into the physical and biochemical responses to its environment. The technology, which combines an atomic force microscope and nuclear magnetic resonance system, could help researchers study individual cancer cells, for example, to uncover mechanisms leading up to cancer metastasis for research and diagnostics.

The prototype's capabilities were demonstrated by taking nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of hydrogen atoms in water. Findings represent a proof of concept of the technology and are detailed in a research paper that appeared online April 11 in the journal Applied Physics Letters. The paper was co-authored by Mousoulis' research scientist Teimour Maleki, Babak Ziaie, a professor of electrical and computer engineering; and Neu.

"You could detect many different types of chemical elements, but in this case hydrogen is nice to detect because it's abundant," Neu said. "You could detect carbon, nitrogen and other elements to get more detailed information about specific biochemistry inside a cell."

An atomic force microscope (AFM) uses a tiny vibrating probe called a cantilever to yield information about materials and surfaces on the scale of nanometers, or billionths of a meter. Because the instrument enables scientists to "see" objects far smaller than possible using light microscopes, it could be ideal for studying molecules, cell membranes and other biological structures.

However, the AFM does not provide information about the biological and chemical properties of cells. So the researchers fabricated a metal microcoil on the AFM cantilever. An electrical current is passed though the coil, causing it to exchange electromagnetic radiation with protons in molecules within the cell and inducing another current in the coil, which is detected.

The Purdue researchers perform "mechanobiology" studies to learn how forces exerted on cells influence their behavior. In work focusing on osteoarthritis, their research includes the study of cartilage cells from the knee to learn how they interact with the complex matrix of structures and biochemistry between cells.

Future research might include studying cells in "microfluidic chambers" to test how they respond to specific drugs and environmental changes.

A U.S. patent application has been filed for the concept. The research has been funded by Purdue's Showalter Trust Fund and the National Institutes of Health.

Microsoft announces Xbox event for May 21st

What many suspected was coming has indeed happened: Microsoft just confirmed an upcoming Xbox event on May 21st, which we expect to be focused on the company's next-gen Xbox console (informally codenamed Durango). The company isn't diving into specifics at this stage, but the event is taking place on its own Xbox campus and should offer a "real taste of the future," according to Xbox Live programming director Larry Hryb. Don't worry too much that Microsoft will completely upstage E3, which happens just a few weeks later -- Hryb also promises that his firm will "continue the conversation" at the show, focusing attention on its game lineup. Players will have a chance to stream the event through both Microsoft's services (including Xbox Live) and Spike TV, but you can be sure we'll be on the ground to share the news first-hand.
