Paris plane crash spurs cultural growth in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) ? Fifty years ago, a group of 106 influential cultural and civic leaders from Atlanta traveled to Europe to visit famous museums and demonstrate the ascendant southern city's commitment to culture.

The Atlanta area's population in 1962 had recently hit a million people, but political and business leaders worried the growth wouldn't continue if the city didn't improve its museums and venues for theater and music. The city's cultural development would be altered forever by the trip, but in ways that had to do more with its tragic end.

The group was on its way home June 3 when its chartered Air France plane crashed on takeoff at Orly Field in Paris, killing all but two flight attendants. It had been the worst single plane crash to date.

"The community was just in shock," said Joe Bankoff, outgoing president and CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta. "I mean, to lose over 100 people in a moment was just unbelievable. But to lose such a cross section of Atlanta was particularly important."

On the flight were artists, company leaders, the first woman elected to the city's school board and other leaders. Among the sites on their packed agenda were the Louvre in Paris, the Coliseum in Rome and London Bridge.

Out of the city's grief grew a sense that something needed to be done to memorialize them, to improve on its tiny art museum in an old house and struggling art school.

"These people were heads of companies in Atlanta. They were the wives who did a lot of the volunteer work at the art association," said Susan Lowance, who had traveled with the group but had decided to stay in Europe longer to visit friends.

She believes the development of the arts center is a fitting tribute to her friends.

"These were people who had a stake in what was going to happen, and what happened was wonderful," Lowance said.

Atlanta is now home to a world-class art museum that has collaborated with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre, a Grammy-winning symphony orchestra and other top-notch cultural institutions.

Several business leaders led the efforts to create a permanent home for the arts. They wanted to honor the dead, but also shared the belief that to attract big business they needed to have big arts.

"It was about doing something that would put Atlanta on the map, and that vision was driven really by people who were not themselves passionate about the arts," said Bankoff, whose last day as head of the arts center was Thursday.

The idea was to create a single entity that would house all major art forms. It led to the establishment of Atlanta Arts Alliance and the Memorial Arts Center ? now named the Woodruff Arts Center, after former Coca-Cola president and major donor Robert Woodruff.

The groundbreaking for the Memorial Arts Center was held on June 3, 1966, the fourth anniversary of the crash. It took about two years to complete with a final price tag of more than $13 million, according to "Explosion At Orly," a book by historian Ann Abrams.

When the center opened in October 1968, the French ambassador to the United States presented to the city a casting of sculptor Auguste Rodin's "The Shade." Today it sits on the grounds of the High Museum of Art in a memorial ringed by polished stone etched with the names of those who died in the Orly crash.

The center has grown over the years to include the Richard Meier-designed High, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Alliance Theatre, the 14th Street Playhouse and the Atlanta College of Art.

Speculating on what the Atlanta arts footprint would look like today if the crash had never happened, both Abrams and Bankoff said they believe the city was destined to grow into a major arts center.

"Frankly, it would have happened anyway, but it might have taken a little longer, and it might have taken a few different turns," Abrams said.

The different artistic entities would likely have been scattered instead of winding up on a single campus in Midtown Atlanta, Bankoff said. The visual and performing arts were grouped under combined management, which may have accelerated their development and strength.

While Atlanta's profile in arts bloomed, the families of the crash victims put their lives back together.

Penny Hart was a 19-year-old college sophomore studying at the Sorbonne in Paris when her mother, Henrietta Collier Armstrong Ayer, came over on the trip. They ate dinner together the night before the crash.

"It was just a wonderful, happy occasion all the way around," Hart said.

Hart's stepfather booked her a flight to Atlanta the day after the crash. She stayed for several weeks and returned to Paris to finish her studies after her mother's funeral. After graduation, she abandoned her plans to go to graduate school for clinical psychology and decided she wanted to keep traveling. She became a flight attendant for Pan American World Airlines for several years.

"There was no one to stop me, and my mother would have stopped me. It just wouldn't have fit in with her image of things," Hart said. "I had a great deal of freedom, I guess. But it's also very strange to have no support if you need it."

She eventually returned to Atlanta. Her involvement in the memorial project was limited until decades later when she helped the center locate surviving relatives of the victims.

"Most of them were so thrilled to have been found because they hadn't had anybody to talk to about this very much and certainly not for a long time," she said. "In those days, you didn't wallow in your troubles publicly ever. You got right back up and dusted yourself off and got moving again."

Also killed were Tom Little Sr., an architect who restored 18th-century buildings, and his wife, Charlotte, who decorated the interiors with period furnishings. Their son, Tom, was 12 and was being cared for by an aunt while his parents were in Europe. He remembers watching cartoons in his parents' bedroom when the phone rang. He answered at the same time that his aunt picked up the extension in the kitchen and listened as another aunt sobbed that the plane had crashed.

Little remembers sharing stories with other family members of victims at the 40th anniversary of the crash. In his home, a photo of his parents taken just before they left for Europe sits on a shelf, and framed pencil drawings by his father hang on the walls. He said even he and his older sister had rarely spoken about the crash.

The Woodruff Arts Center and other organizations have planned events to mark the date, and Bankoff said the 50th anniversary provides "a moment to stop and reflect not just on the loss, but on 50 years of continuous support for arts and culture in the community as an important sign of what this community values."

"I'm glad that we have these anniversaries," Little said, "because I like to think that my parents' legacy will last forever."

Rio has a lot of work to do before Rio+20, the World Cup, and the Olympics. But by the time the last event is over, not only will Rio have changed dramatically, but Brazil will be a different country.

Less than a month from the start date for the Rio + 20 UN conference on sustainable development, government officials scrambled to reduce hotel costs and make more more rooms available. The problem?wasn?t just a shortage of hotel rooms or outrageously expensive rates, but?a travel agency that had blocked out most of them for a mere 25 percent service charge, on top of the hotel price.

And only two years away from the World Cup, which will take place in twelve Brazilian cities including Rio de Janeiro, ?a new government report shows that less than 1 percent of the $13 billion USD equivalent set aside for infrastructure has been spent so far, with 44 of 101 projects still in the blueprint stage.

Fruit just dangles off the trees here ? and there are always so many imprevistos (unexpected difficulties, such as?torrential rain, a building collapse,?a shootout between cops). Why bother to plan?

Dare we hope for mega-event readiness? It?s a question being asked by a growing number of observers.

One foreign blog friend with long experience in the arts explains the penchant for procrastination with the observation that Brazilians like to wait until the last minute and then, by way of a heroic effort, produce a stunning result ? and look heroic.

Often, waiting until the last minute allows for waiving the required bidding process, which in turn allows for padding contracts.

So you might say that procrastination walks hand in hand with making an opportunity into one?s personal best.

And yet

A presentation of Rio?s new Strategic Plan at the OsteRio debate venue last May 14 indicated that planning has become central to urban life and politics. On taking office,?Mayor Eduardo Paes made a plan and stuck to it, with meetings, followup, and implementation that included performance bonuses for effective city servants. The new one is meant to be part of the electoral debate for the October municipal elections.

Those who commented on the?new?US$ 15 billion equivalent plan ? which was drawn up with the help of McKinsey & Company consulting plus 200 carioca notables and a public opinion survey ? said its very existence was reason for celebration. ?It means that city hall has recouped its ability to act,? said researcher Jos? Marcelo Zacchi, adding that the challenges facing the city at the start of Paes? term demanded a great deal of thought and planning.

One should not forget, after all, that until 15 months ago all you had to do to get on a bus was raise your hand, as long as you were outdoors and somewhat close to a curb (surviving the ride without needing physical therapy was, and still is, another matter). And that until about eight months ago, electric, cable, gas, and water utilities dug holes and laid networks with zero supervision and zero coordination amongst them. Thus the exploding manhole covers.

Jos? Marcelo?Zacchi recently left the city?s Social UPP program?s top post to join the urban issues thinktank, IETS. Like everyone who?s involved with the transformation of Rio, he?s constantly demanding more. ?We have a well-prepared core, but we don?t have metropolitan management, and we don?t have any connection with that core at the level of local management, decentralized, in neighborhoods,? he said about the Strategic Plan. ?We ?have mechanisms for?planning, transparency, followup, accountability, but we have a long way to go when it comes to participation and decentralized participation at the local level.?

Pedro Paulo Teixeira, the mayor?s chief of staff who presented the plan at OsteRio, acknowledged the need for more bottom-up planning.

The Rio police are also investing heavily in planning ? and personnel, and work space and conditions. They also have a long way to go. A shocking fact emerged at a May 17 presentation of the Public Safety Secretariat?s plan for the Rio + 20 Conference to foreign journalists: police called upon to work overtime at special events were paid nothing. This changes now.

?There?ll be greater willingness to work,? said Roberto Alzir, Special Undersecretary for Mega-Events. Police academy instructors also weren?t paid; the whole system is being reformulated, in large measure to produce more pacification officers. Today, 5,000 officers work in the current 22 police pacification units. The planned number for 2014 is 12,500.

It helps if they?re moving upwards

Clearly regard for those at the bottom of the pyramid is growing. It?s not for nothing that TV Globo?s new novela das oito, Avenida Brasil,?features the not-so-poor-anymore of Rio?s North and West Zones and has reached the best kickoff audience statistics over any other prime-time soap in the last five years. Parenthetically, TV Globo recently started calling the eight o?clock novela a nine o?clock novela, which has always been the time the program airs? definitely a good sign.

Ricardo Henriques, who in August leaves his post as president of ?Rio?s strategic planning and data agency, Instituto Pereira Passos (IPP), speaks of a ?reconfiguration of the social fabric,? and says that cariocas are learning how to engage in dialogue. Mr. Henriques, who?passes on his responsibilities, including the Social UPP program, to Eduarda de la Rocque, currently municipal Finance Secretary, built the program around the concept of ?strong listening.? The results have greatly expanded urban services and also?drawn criticism, part of the vibrant give-and-take currently going on here.

Clientelist and patrimonial behavior can be seen not only among elites, but the poor too, observes Henriques. ?They often come with a list of demands, instead of a readiness to dialogue,? he noted during a Rio de Encontros debate last week on entrepreneurship and sustainability. ?We have to break the armor on both sides, to build trust.?

During a discussion?partly sponsored by energy and mining magnate Eike Batista?s?EBX Institute with director Pedro Rivera?at Columbia University?s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation?s local Studio X, urban agitator Marcus Faustini echoed that thought. He suggested the creation of ?Territorial Funds,? to be managed by community members. ?You have to empower people to decide where they want to go,? he added. ?They aren?t prepared. It would even be a teaching tool. They have to plan, not ask for things. Everyone has to change.?

Mayor Paes and incoming IPP chief de la Rocque have proposed a?similar fund idea. Income inequality is at the heart of so much left to do.

The challenges and mindtraps lie in unlikely places.?Jailson da Silva,?Coordinator of the Observat?rio de Favelas favela research and advocacy group, criticized the title of another gathering held last week, the Semin?rio Integra??o: Favela-Cidade. ?Favelas are already part of the city,? he pointed out. ?They are integrated? and unequal.? When there used to be shooting in the favela of Cantagalo, invariably the newspapers would headline Ipanema residents? loss of sleep, he added.

Dangling fruit, for a select few?

It could be that the reason for Brazilian dillydallying isn?t that pickings are easy, but the fact that for a minority, the pickings are near at hand; while for many people, they?re are out of reach.

How to get near the mango tree, when a small group has better muscles and longer arms? And why, if you were in the small group and close to the?mangueira, would you bother to plan much? If an imprevisto appears, all you have to do is throw money at a bunch of relatively unskilled workers and they?ll shake the tree (praying no mangoes fall on?their?heads), bag the fruit, and hand it over. The solution leaves a few unhappy?toucans, but those ungainly avians prey on other birds? eggs, so they have it coming.

Except that unskilled workers are getting expensive and?feisty?(and relatively less unskilled); a growing number of people are coming to realize that the mangoes are taxpayer-financed and we all pay taxes; inequality is an ever-more key issue; and the exchanges that globalization brings are challenging long-held traditions, behaviors and values.

In other words, Brazil may actually not be fully ready for its mega-events, but by the time the last one is over, not only will Rio have changed dramatically, but this will be a very different country.

Hornsby to represent US in sprint kayak in London

DUISBURG, Germany (AP) ? Tim Hornsby of Atlanta will represent the United States in the sprint kayak at the London Olympics after beating teammate Ryan Dolan on Sunday at a World Cup event.

Hornsby finished fifth in the ?B? final of the 200 meters in Duisburg. He was 0.248 seconds ahead of Dolan, who was eighth.

Hornsby will be competing at his first Olympics. He says going to the Olympics ?has been a dream forever. It?s amazing that it?s actually happening. I?m tripping out.?

The 200 is making its debut at a Summer Games this year.

LA Galaxy Academy Youth Teams Participate In Copa LA

The LA Galaxy Academy youth teams are participating in the 11th annual Copa LA Youth Soccer Tournament this Memorial Day weekend at the Ab Brown Sports Complex in Riverside. The U-12, U-13, U14, and U-15 Galaxy teams are all participating in this tournament that features teams from throughout Central and Southern California as well as Arizona, Nevada, and Mexico.

On Saturday they had a very good day winning all their games. They're all in a position to make the semi-finals tomorrow. They're all contenders to take home medals in their own division on day one.

Omar Gonzalez was out there, signing autographs as seen in the lead photo and taking part in a ceremonial first kick as seen in the above photo. Great to see Gonzalez out there putting smiles on kids' faces as he continues to recover from his knee injury.

The Galaxy U-12's were the team to benefit most from the tournament. Next month they travel to Arizona to participate in the US Far West regionals, which makes Copa LA a great tune up tournament. The U-12's qualified for the USY Far Regionals by winning the Cal South National Cup in March. The tournament in Arizona promises a berth in the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

When you think of natural disaster preparedness, pets aren?t usually included in plans for disasters. But we, and organizations like FEMA, advocate that animals are family members, too. In fact, FEMA and the HSUS signed a partnership agreement that fosters fair pet treatment in cases of natural disasters. (They?ve even dubbed May 8 as National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day).

Here are two simple rules to follow when preparing for hurricanes and other natural disasters, with your pets in mind:

Rule One: Plan for pet safety if you can?t be with them.

• This means your four-legged friends are decked out with collars, ids, or a microchip. If the disaster separates you from your missing pets, you can quickly locate them.
• Coordinate with neighbors or family members to assist your pets in emergencies. Give them an extra pair of keys to your home, indicate where leashes and the?extra stash of pet food are ? somewhere easily accessible -?so that they can grab your pets and their necessities with haste.
• Secure pet health information, such as medication prescriptions or vaccination files, online so that your files won?t be destroyed during a hurricane or tornado.
• Have emergency contact numbers, such as your pet?s veterinarian, on your phone or online for quicker assistance.

Rule two: if you take shelter inside, ensure your pets have shelter as well.

• Create a calm environment for your pets, as they may be riled up due to the chaos of the disaster.?Keep them restrained, with leashes or carriers, but in close proximity to you so that you can immediately unhook them or carry them out when evacuating.
• Designate a room for emergency supplies, and appropriate a section for your pet?s supplies as well. This shortens preparation time during the disaster, and provides you more time to be with your pets, as well as give them what they need without fumbling around for the essential items.

Evacuate the premises immediately, but double check that your four-legged friends (or winged friends) are safe and can easily be taken with you.

Egypt to pick Islamist or military man as president

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians must choose between a Muslim Brother or an ex-military man in a presidential run-off that highlights the stark rifts in a nation united in euphoria when Hosni Mubarak fell 15 months ago, first-round results indicated on Friday.

With most votes counted, the Muslim Brotherhood said its candidate Mohamed Mursi had topped this week's polls and would compete in next month's second round with former air force chief Ahmed Shafiq, who served as Mubarak's last prime minister.

The election marks a crucial step in a messy and often bloody transition to democracy, overseen by a military council that has pledged to hand power to a new president by July 1.

More turbulence could follow if Shafiq is elected and his foes have already vowed to take to the streets if that happens.

A victory for Mursi could worsen tensions between resurgent Islamists and the army, self-appointed guardian of the state.

Official results are due on Tuesday, but a senior judge involved in supervising the vote said Mursi and Shafiq were in the lead, based on figures from 90 percent of polling stations.

Leftist Hamdeen Sabahy came third, he said. The Brotherhood put Sabahy fourth behind another Islamist, Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, in a close race in which Mursi won 25 percent of votes.

A member of Shafiq's campaign also said Mursi and Shafiq were in the lead, but that counting was not complete.

The election has split Egyptians between those who oppose an effective return to the Mubarak era and those who fear an Islamist monopoly of ruling institutions.

The run-off will be held on June 16 and 17.

"Now Egyptians will have to choose between the revolution and the counter-revolution," Mohamed Beltagy, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's party, told Reuters.

UNCOMFORTABLE CHOICE

But Islamists were slow to join the revolt against Mubarak and some of the youth who were at its forefront were aghast at the outcome of the first round and the choice they now face.

Tareq Farouq, 34, a Cairo driver, said: "I'm in shock. How could this happen? The people don't want Mursi or Shafiq. We're sick of both. They are driving people back to Tahrir Square."

Christians and secular liberals anxious about personal freedoms - and the fate of Egypt's vital tourist industry - will fret about a promised Brotherhood push for Islamic law.

But Shafiq's supporters believe his military background and government experience make him the man to restore order and stability so that the battered economy can revive.

"People voted for Shafiq for his honesty and clarity which people are craving for. They believed him when he said Egypt is for everyone," said Karim Salem, a Shafiq campaign aide.

If Mursi becomes president, Islamists will control most ruling institutions - but not the military - in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, consolidating electoral gains made by fellow-Islamists in other Arab countries in the past year.

Israel has nervously watched the Islamists' rise, especially in Egypt, its old enemy until a 1979 peace treaty. Mursi vaguely advocates a "review" of the pact, but the Brotherhood says it will not tear it up. Shafiq has vowed to uphold it.

The bluntly spoken military man came from behind in a race in which former Arab League chief Amr Moussa and ex-Brotherhood member Abol Fotouh were early favorites.

His late surge reflected the anxiety of many Egyptians about a breakdown of law and order and the often violent political disputes that have punctuated an army-led transition since a popular revolt ousted Mubarak on February 11, 2011.

Egypt will elect a president before writing a post-Mubarak constitution to define the powers of the head of state, parliament and other institutions. The army, bent on preserving its privileges and influence even after the promised handover, might want to curb the mandate of an Islamist president.

STRATEGY FOR ROUND TWO

The Brotherhood's Guidance Office, its top body, met to mull a campaign "to galvanize Islamists and Egyptian voters to face the bloc of the 'feloul'", a Brotherhood official said, using a scornful Arabic term for "remnants" of Mubarak's order.

In an attempt to rally the support around Mursi's bid, the Brotherhood invited leading politicians, including some of those knocked out of the presidential race, to talks to "save the revolution".

The invitee list included Abol Fotouh and Sabahy, said Yasser Ali, a senior official in the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, who added that the agenda would include the position of vice president and a future coalition government.

The Brotherhood, Egypt's most organized political group, has already secured the biggest bloc for its party in parliament after an earlier vote. Long repressed and banned under Mubarak, the 84-year-old Islamist group has a broad grassroots base.

Many Christians, who form about a tenth of Egypt's 82 million people, complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but are likely to vote for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.

Losing Islamist candidate Abol Fotouh, who won 20 percent of the vote by the Brotherhood's count, said in a statement he would now back the Islamist group, even though it expelled him last year for standing for president against its wishes.

Abol Fotouh did not name the Brotherhood, but said he and his supporters would "rise above our political and party differences" and would "stand in a united front against the symbols of corruption and oppression", referring to Shafiq.

The votes of Sabahy, the leftist, could also help swing a run-off between Mursi and Shafiq.

Elijah Zarwan at the European Council on Foreign Relations in London said the outcome was "perhaps the most polarizing and therefore dangerous result possible" and could spark unrest.

"But those who fear the destabilizing effects of sustained Islamist-military confrontation can take some comfort in that neither side has an interest in such a prolonged conflict."

Two days of first-round voting went off calmly with polls closing on Thursday. Monitors reported no major infringements, although some candidates grumbled about their rivals' conduct.

The Brotherhood official, who asked not to be named, said that with votes counted from about 12,800 of the roughly 13,100 polling stations, Mursi had 25 percent, Shafiq 23 percent, Abol Fotouh 20 percent and leftist Hamdeen Sabahy 19 percent. Moussa limped in with just 10 percent.
