(AP) ? A government think tank is urging Chinese leaders to start phasing out China's one-child policy immediately and allow two children for every family by 2015, a daring proposal to do away with the unpopular policy.

Some demographers see the timeline put forward by the China Development Research Foundation as a bold move by the body close to the central leadership. Others warn that the gradual approach, if implemented, would still be insufficient to help correct the problems that China's strict birth limits have created.

Xie Meng, a press affairs official with the foundation, said the final version of the report will be released "in a week or two." But Chinese state media have been given advance copies. The official Xinhua News Agency said the foundation recommends a two-child policy in some provinces from this year and a nationwide two-child policy by 2015. It proposes all birth limits be dropped by 2020, Xinhua reported.

"China has paid a huge political and social cost for the policy, as it has resulted in social conflict, high administrative costs and led indirectly to a long-term gender imbalance at birth," Xinhua said, citing the report.

But it remains unclear whether Chinese leaders are ready to take up the recommendations. China's National Population and Family Planning Commission had no immediate comment on the report Wednesday.

Known to many as the one-child policy, China's actual rules are more complicated. The government limits most urban couples to one child, and allows two children for rural families if their firstborn is a girl. Numerous other exceptions include looser rules for minority families and a two-child limit for parents who are themselves both singletons.

Cai Yong, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, said the report holds extra weight because the think tank is under the State Council, China's Cabinet. He said he found it remarkable that state-backed demographers were willing to publicly propose such a detailed schedule and plan on how to get rid of China's birth limits.

"That tells us at least that policy change is inevitable, it's coming," said Cai, who was not involved in the drafting of the report but knows many of the experts who were. Cai is a visiting scholar at Fudan University in Shanghai. "It's coming, but we cannot predict when exactly it will come."

Adding to the uncertainty is a once-in-a-decade leadership transition that starts Nov. 8 and will see a new slate of top leaders installed by next spring. Cai said the transition could keep population reform on the back burner or changes might be rushed through to help burnish the reputations of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on their way out.

There has been growing speculation among Chinese media, experts and ordinary people about whether the government will soon relax the one-child policy ? introduced in 1980 as a temporary measure to curb surging population growth ? and allow more people to have two children.

Though the government credits the policy with preventing hundreds of millions of births and helping lift countless families out of poverty, it is reviled by many ordinary people. The strict limits have led to forced abortions and sterilizations, even though such measures are illegal. Couples who flout the rules face hefty fines, seizure of their property and loss of their jobs.

Many demographers argue that the policy has worsened the country's aging crisis by limiting the size of the young labor pool that must support the large baby boom generation as it retires. They say it has contributed to the imbalanced sex ratio by encouraging families to abort baby girls, preferring to try for a male heir.

The government recognizes those problems and has tried to address them by boosting social services for the elderly. It has also banned sex-selective abortion and rewarded rural families whose only child is a girl.

Many today also see the birth limits as outdated, a relic of the era when housing, jobs and food were provided by the state.

"It has been thirty years since our planned economy was liberalized," commented Wang Yi, the owner of a shop that sells textiles online, under a news report on the foundation's proposal. "So why do we still have to plan our population?"

Though open debate about the policy has flourished in state media and on the Internet, leaders have so far expressed a desire to maintain the status quo. President Hu said last year that China would keep its strict family planning policy to keep the birth rate low and other officials have said that no changes are expected until at least 2015.

Wang Feng, director of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy and an expert on China's demographics, contributed research material to the foundation's report but has yet to see the full text. He said he welcomed the gist of the document that he's seen in state media.

It says the government "should return the rights of reproduction to the people," he said. "That's very bold."

Gu Baochang, a professor of demography at Beijing's Renmin University and a vocal advocate of reform, said the proposed timeline wasn't aggressive enough.

"They should have reformed this policy ages ago," he said. "It just keeps getting held up, delayed."

CLEVELAND, Ohio (October 29, 2012)A new analysis of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trials show that women who had metabolic syndrome before they started hormone therapy had a greatly increased risk of heart attack or dying of heart disease. Women who didn't have metabolic syndrome beforehand showed no increased risk. The study was published this month online in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society.

"Our findings emphasize the importance of assessing cardiovascular disease risk status when hormone therapy is considered for relief of menopausal symptoms," wrote the WHI investigators who authored the study.

Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. They include a large waistline, high blood pressure, high blood glucose or diabetes, high triglycerides, or low HDLthe "good cholesterol." Obesity is the key feature, which predisposes women to the others.

In this analysis, a woman was considered to have metabolic syndrome if she had three of any of the five metabolic syndrome features; 269 women met the criteria when they started the trial and were compared with 695 women who did not have metabolic syndrome.

The women who did not have metabolic syndrome showed no increased risk of heart disease, whether they took hormones or not. But the risk of a heart attack or dying of heart disease was more than double for women who had metabolic syndrome and took hormones (either combined estrogen-progestogen or estrogen alone if they had undergone hysterectomy) compared with women who had metabolic syndrome and did not take hormones. Women with metabolic syndrome who took estrogen alone had a smaller increase in risk, but they were still at significantly higher risk than women with metabolic syndrome who did not take hormones.

In the WHI, women took oral formulations of hormone therapy, which were common at the time. Today, smaller doses and other forms, such skin patches or gels, are being used. In addition, women in the WHI were older (average age 66 in this analysis) than the age women usually start hormone therapy for menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats. Newer formulations and earlier use of hormone therapy may be safer, but more study needs to be done to find out if having metabolic syndrome makes a difference with these types of hormone therapy.

The study will be published in the March 2013 print edition of Menopause.

GCC Needs to Invest in Unconventional Gas>> LNG World News

GCC Needs to Invest in Unconventional Gas

In the GCC?s oil and gas industry, past developments have focused more on enhancing the oil sector as opposed to the gas sector. However, with recent reports on the demand for gas both globally and domestically on the rise, as well as unconventional gas competition from the US, the GCC needs to invest significantly to capitalise on this important and profitable industry.

The IEA reported that the current 100bn cu. m. (cubic meters) annual demand for gas in the GCC is expected to rise more than 300bn cu. m. in 2020 and up to 600bn cu m by 2030.

Power generation is one of the main reasons for the increase in demand especially since countries in the GCC are heavily investing to rapidly develop gas-powered heavy industries such as petrochemicals, aluminium and steel.

Furthermore, all electricity generation in the UAE, Qatar and Oman is from gas, and with the population of the GCC expected to reach 53 million by 2020, the GCC will have to depend on gas imports rather than benefit from an export thriving gas industry.

In addition to having a severe negative effect on the population, failure to invest adequately in gas will negatively affect the GCC economies, as gas imports will rise drastically.

Dr. Naji, Managing Director, Petroleb, the Lebanese oil and gas operating company, said, ?Governments can intervene to provide organisations and investors with regulations to attract investments in new sources of gas to compete not just with the US, but China and Europe. By doing this, it will put the GCC region on the world map of gas exporting countries, especially since unconventional gas is getting more and more important.?

According to Dr. Naji, the main challenge in the GCC is to develop competing gas resources, especially unconventional gas. This is because the US is increasingly becoming an important exporter of gas in the world market where demand is not increasing in the same way as supply. This would place plenty of pressure on gas producers and exporters in the region and can significantly affect the economic prosperity of the region.

Gas is not only important but also cheaper than oil. A report released earlier this year by Qatar National Bank Research Department (QNB Capital), stated that gas could be regarded as cheaper relative to oil if environmental costs are taken into account, as it is a cleaner burning and more efficient fuel.

The GCC currently has gas reserves of 42trn cu. m. of gas accounting for 22% of global gas reserves illustrating significant opportunity if addressed strategically.

Dr. Naji further continued to state that GCC countries should follow the example of Saudi Arabia, which is developing its own shale gas and unconventional gas to compete on a global scale.

In addition to developing their own resources, GCC countries should also collaborate with member countries and neighbours providing opportunities to speed up the gas sector development process.

Dr. Naji said, ?I believe there are plenty of opportunities in developing the unconventional gas resources. One would be formulising a strategy to import gas from neighbouring countries through pipelines. Another would be to build floating LNG terminals in the hope that countries find gas for these terminals to become permanent.?

Dr. Naji is confirmed to participate at the Gas Arabia Summit to be held in Muscat, Oman from 2 ? 5 December 2012.

According to Dr. Naji, the Gas Arabia Summit is an important event to share valuable insight on how to develop the region?s gas industry. ?It will be interesting to participate as both speaker and attendee at the event as a comprehensive analysis of the entire sector, the latest regional government intervention along with successful technologies and strategies will be highlighted throughout the conference. The conference will feature everything we need to develop the unconventional gas industry efficiently and be globally competitive,? said Dr. Naji.

Furthermore, with four days of learning, debating and networking: from gas flaring to horizontal drilling, the Gas Arabia Summit is a must attend event for anyone involved in the GCC?s gas industry.

Couple of weekly portions of oily fish can help ward off stroke; But fish oil supplements don't have the same effect, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eating at least two servings of oily fish a week is moderately but significantly associated with a reduced risk of stroke, finds a study published on the British Medical Journal website.

But taking fish oil supplements doesn't seem to have the same effect, say the researchers.

Regular consumption of fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acids has been linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and current guidelines recommend eating at least two portions of fish a week, preferably oily fish like mackerel and sardines. But evidence supporting a similar benefit for stroke remains unclear.

So an international team of researchers, led by Dr. Rajiv Chowdhury at Cambridge University and Professor Oscar H. Franco at Erasmus MC Rotterdam, analysed the results of 38 studies to help clarify the association between fish consumption and risk of stroke or mini-stroke (transient ischaemic attack or TIA). Collectively, these conditions are known as cerebrovascular disease.

The 38 studies involved nearly 800,000 individuals in 15 countries and included patients with established cardiovascular disease (secondary prevention studies) as well as lower risk people without the disease (primary prevention studies). Differences in study quality were taken into account to identify and minimise bias.

Fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acid consumption was assessed using dietary questionnaires, identifying markers of omega 3 fats in the blood, and recording use of fish oil supplements. A total of 34,817 cerebrovascular events were recorded during the studies.

After adjusting for several risk factors, participants eating two to four servings a week had a moderate but significant 6% lower risk of cerebrovascular disease compared with those eating one or fewer servings of fish a week, while participants eating five or more servings a week had a 12% lower risk.

An increment of two servings per week of any fish was associated with a 4% reduced risk of cerebrovascular disease. In contrast, levels of omega 3 fats in the blood and fish oil supplements were not significantly associated with a reduced risk.

Several reasons could explain the beneficial impact of eating fish on vascular health, say the authors. For example, it may be due to interactions between a wide range of nutrients, like vitamins and essential amino acids, commonly found in fish. Alternatively, eating more fish may lead to a reduction in other foods, like red meat, that are detrimental to vascular health. Or higher fish intake may simply be an indicator of a generally healthier diet or higher socioeconomic status, both associated with better vascular health.

The differences seen between white and oily fish may be explained by the way they are typically cooked (white fish is generally battered and deep fried, adding potentially damaging fats).

Although there's a possibility that some other unmeasured (confounding) factor may explain their results, the authors conclude that "they reinforce a potentially modest beneficial role of fish intake in the cause of cerebrovascular disease."

In addition, they say their findings are in line with current dietary guidelines that encourage fish consumption for all; and intake of fish oils to people with pre-existing or at high risk of heart disease. They also support the view that future nutritional guidelines should be principally "food based."

In an accompanying editorial, authors from the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University suggest that although it is "reasonable" to advise patients that eating one or two portions of fish per week could reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, any benefit of long chain omega 3 fatty acid supplementation is likely to be small. They say it is possible, however, that patients with additional risk factors such as diabetes may benefit.

Pumpkin Hot Chocolate(Vegan) - Food Doodles

by Heidi @ Food Doodles on October 30, 2012

Today is a rainy, cold, miserable day here.? Although I?m sure it is far more miserable elsewhere in the world and I?m keeping those on the east coast in my thoughts.? I did think that some hot chocolate would be a nice thing to share today.? I think we could all use a mug of this :)

I made this hot chocolate vegan by using almond milk.? And to be totally honest, it was awesome.? I almost think dairy milk would have been too thick and rich unless you use low fat.? Sometimes I really prefer almond milk, and this is one of those instances.? But go with what you enjoy.? The pumpkin in this makes it slightly thick and creamier than regular hot chocolate.? I did use a homemade pumpkin puree though so a store bought pumpkin puree will be thicker.? I?m not sure if I?d want this any thicker, so maybe use less of a store bought pumpkin puree.

Oh and that in the background?? I?ll share that soon.? I may tweak the recipe a little before I share it though.? That?s chai spiced apple butter in the center of those bars though.? Can you say yum?? I?m happy to have to make those again soon to test the recipe out :D

For now, enjoy some hot chocolate and I hope everyone stays safe over the next couple days!

Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

Serves 2-3

  • 2 C milk(almond milk works perfectly)
  • 1/4 C homemade pumpkin puree(use less of store bought puree as it?s thicker)
  • 3/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
  • 3-4 tbsp maple syrup
  • pinch of salt
  • dash of vanilla

On the stove in a small pot, whisk together the milk, pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, cocoa, maple syrup(or honey) and pinch of salt.? Heat over medium heat until it comes to a boil.? Whisk and cook for 2 minutes.? Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla and cool until ready to serve, or serve immediately with a splash of extra milk, a dollop of whipped cream, marshmallows or your favorite other hot chocolate toppings.

Effective Diet For High Blood PressureHigh blood pressure is a common yet serious disorder, which is associated with the increased pressure of blood against the arterial walls. This condition further increases your risk of suffering from several other health conditions such as coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke. It is estimated that almost 35 per cent of the population of the United States suffers from high blood pressure.

Therefore, it is important to treat this condition and prevent the blood pressure of the patient from rising abnormally. Although medications are used to lower blood pressure, diet plays a very crucial role in lowering as well as maintaining blood pressure levels in the human body. Given below is an effective diet plan for treating the problem of high blood pressure.

Diet Plan For?High Blood Pressure

Include Whole Grains

Several research surveys have indicated that consuming whole grains is helpful in reducing blood pressure levels. This is due to the fact that whole grains possess high concentrations of minerals such as potassium and magnesium, which help in decreasing blood pressure levels.

Diet Plan For High Blood Pressure

Whole grains that help in reducing blood pressure include oats, brown rice, bulgur, barley, bran and whole grain pasta. You should aim at consuming whole grains along with every meal.

Include Beans and Dairy Products

Beans and lentils are considered beneficial for high blood pressure patients, as they contain good amounts of potassium. Potassium is considered effective in lowering high blood pressure. The best beans that contain high amounts of potassium include lima beans, garbanzo beans, naval beans and black beans.

It is highly recommended that you avoid purchasing canned beans, as they possess high amounts of sodium. Dairy products are also helpful in lowering blood pressure levels, due to the fact that they possess high amounts of calcium, which is a mineral that maintains blood pressure.

Include dairy products such as skim milk, yogurt and cheese, as they are very helpful in decreasing blood pressure levels in human beings. It is advisable that you avoid processed cheese, due to the high sodium content.

Decrease Sodium Intake

Decreasing the amount of sodium in your diet is essential for lowering blood pressure levels. Several health organizations recommend consuming only 2300 mg of sodium each day, which is approximately one teaspoon of salt.

High Blood Pressure

However, if you suffer from high blood pressure, the recommended intake of sodium is 1500 mg per day. Common foods that contain high amounts of sodium include sauces, processed cheese, canned meat, beans and pickle.

Include Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are considered extremely beneficial for high blood pressure patients due to the fact that they possess high amounts of potassium and negligible amounts of sodium. Fruits and vegetables that are good for high blood pressure patients include oranges, spinach, kale, grapefruit, apples, banana, watermelon, papaya, cabbage, pumpkin and onions.

Avoid consuming packaged fruits and vegetables as they contain high amounts of sodium. It is highly recommended that you consume five to six servings of fruits and vegetables as a part of your diet, on a daily basis. Try eating fruits and vegetables raw as cooking destroy the nutritive value.

Gallows Humor

Screen Shot 2012-10-30 at 6.52.48 PMManhattan, a place I've always considered a spiritual home and sometimes an actual one, actually turned into?a real life version of all?those post-apocalyptic movies about Manhattan on Monday evening as Superstorm Sandy hit landfall. We all learned that what the disaster?movies miss in their bathos is something elemental to human behavior in these sorts of situations: Gallows humor. Those of us with access to the Internet watched enthralled as the center of world commerce, New York City, was swallowed by flooding that eventually left 43 people dead and millions of dollars of property damaged.?Because of all of the aforementioned disaster movies, the scenes broadcast were eerily familiar. Fake photos of the carnage abounded, trumped only by the more horrific, and real photos of the carnage. And jokes, lots of jokes.

Funeral Notice In The Gas Station

by admin on October 29, 2012

This happened about 4 years ago when I was working at a small town convenience store/gas station. A regular customer (Scott) came in to buy diesel for his truck. I knew him a little because I went to school with his son so we had a pleasant conversation while his tank was being filled. There are several funeral homes in the neighboring town who sends funeral notices with information such as who died, their family, when the funeral was, etc. We had gotten several that day and I was talking with Scott while I put them up on the notice board when he all of a sudden became very quiet. He looked at the funeral notices for a moment, looking more upset by the second before saying, ?Oh, well I guess my mom died. My brother never told me.? He quickly paid for his diesel and drove away very upset. When I looked at the notice it said that his mom had died 3 days ago. Imagine finding out your mom died from a public funeral notice!?? 1026-12

Sad.? Very sad.

Adoption & Foster Care: My Personal Experiences: Race ...

Last month was Hispanic Heritage month (Thank you for the reminder, Disney Junior!) and it occurred to me, ?Hey- we have a household member of Hispanic heritage? because quite honestly, I sometimes forget.? One-third of our foster children have been Hispanic, including our current foster daughter, Rose.? Although I initially felt rather ?proud? at my color-blindness and the fact that Rose?s skin color isn?t that big of a deal to me, I later felt a little guilty and thought, ?Should I do something to acknowledge that our foster daughter is of a different heritage and color than the rest of my family??? Then again, at just over a year old she?s probably too young to even realize her skin is a darker shade than the rest of ours so would acknowledging her diversity really make a difference?? Opinions on the subject will vary.?

?

What I do know is that mixed race families never seemed to be something I ever gave too much thought to- I have nieces and nephews who are biracial or who have married inter-racially and as with our foster daughter, I sometimes forget the fact.? But lately such couples and families seem to really stick out to me- perhaps because my own family now fits that description- if only on a temporary basis.

Gerstenzang described this exact phenomenon in a chapter of her book.? Describing what it was like to foster a child of a different race she said,

?During the initial period when Cecelia lived with us and I became temporarily obsessed with race, I noticed every baby that ?matched? her mother or father and every one that didn?t.? My eye was like a camera, and everywhere I went I took snapshots of children and their parents: white baby nursing at white mother?s breast; Asian female face in a stroller with white male pushing the stroller; two brown parents with their two brown children.? I was hyperaware of issues that I had thought a lot about before but that now seemed so personal.?

If you?ll excuse my oversimplified analogy, it?s kind of like if you?ve ever had the experience of looking for a new car or even buying a new pair of shoes- suddenly you find yourself paying particular attention to the kinds of cars people drive (or what shoes they?re wearing) and it seems like you notice the kind of car that you?re interested in pops up EVERYWHERE. ?Now this is not necessarily because there?s a sudden influx of that particular car on the market, but rather it just seems more apparent since it?s at the forefront of your mind.

That?s how I?ve felt since Rose has been back in our care again in noticing both a prevalence of multi-racial families or the differences in our races and issues- albeit minor- having to do with race which I?ve never had to give much thought to before.

Here?s a few small examples:

Example #1- Last month I was at a soccer game and being the Sunscreen Nazi that I am (because of a history of skin cancer thanks to my British heritage and too much time spent worshipping the sun in my invincible younger years!) I started lathering sunscreen all over my daughter?s fair skin before the game started.? I then looked down at Rose and her golden skin and wondered, ?Do I need to apply some to her skin or does her darker coloring serve as protection against the sun?s rays?? I?ve honestly never had to think about it before.?

Example #2- While looking through the Sunday ads and thinking about what toys to get for Christmastime (because I like to prepare early), I decided that a doll would be a great choice for Rose.? But I had to search a little harder than I originally would have because I wanted to find one with brown skin- like hers.??

Example #3-? One day when my family went for a walk and while my white husband was pushing Rose in her stroller we passed a Hispanic man pushing a very fair-skinned looking child (I?m assuming his own) in a stroller.? ?That?s ironic?- I thought as we passed.? My husband and I exchanged comical glances.?

My mother, who was raised in a small western town during the depression said that when she was growing up it WAS a big deal to see a mixed race family- stares would abound.? But fast forward to nowadays, as an almost eighty year old grandmother, having mixed race grandchildren, foster grandchildren, and great grandchildren of her own isn?t that big of a deal anymore- and I?m grateful for that.??

Yet there needs to be a balance between being color-blind and having a ?Does it really matter?? attitude and acknowledging that, ?Yes- being a member of a transracial family can be a big deal? and that differences in skin color should be recognized and even celebrated rather than ignored.??

I was particularly interested in the chapter in Another Mother about race relations, foster care, adoption, and social policy.? As a white foster parent to a black infant foster daughter (And I use the term ?black? rather than African American because not all people with black skin come from Africa- as is the case with Haitians, Jamaicans, and Brazilians, for example) Gerstenzang ?had her fair share of curious inquiries, stares, unsolicited advice and opinions and in some cases, outright rude remarks from others, both people close to her and perfect strangers.???

?One of the things I particularly worried about was that some black people might feel upset that we were parenting a black child.? If I could have posted a sign on my back it would have read: ?We are trying to help a family get back together.? We are foster parents.? We aren?t kidnapping this child.????

Incidentally, I also recently read a blog post which a black foster family shared their experiences fostering white children, including a very unfortunate event when the foster father was watching his foster daughters play at a park and a concerned bystander approached the little girls and asked if they were alright or if the?man?(their foster father) was bothering them.??*Can anyone please tell me where I read that so I can reference it?*? Too bad the foster father couldn?t have been wearing a sign on his back.??

Gerzenstang?s concerns about parenting a black child as a white woman did not just stem from her daily encounters with others, but from her study of social policy.? She recalled a stance made by the National Association of Black Social Worker?s (NABSW) in response to the trend in the early 70s of white families adopting black children:

?Black children should be placed only with Black families whether in foster care or adoption.? Black children belong physically, psychologically, and culturally in Black families in order that they receive the total sense of themselves and develop a sound projection of their future.? Human beings are products of their environment and develop their sense of values, attitudes, and self-concepts within their own family structure.? Black children in white homes are cut off from the healthy development of themselves as Black people.?

Thank goodness that the NABSW has since modified its stance.? Otherwise, there would be even more children waiting for homes.? Gerstenzang continued to explain:

?By 1994, the NABSW had modified its position with a three-tiered statement.? The priority, the top tier, was preserving or reunifying black families; the second tier was adoption by parents of the same race; and the third tier was adoption by parents of another race, but only after appropriate members of the African American community had determined that the second tier was unreachable.?

On a related personal note, I can?t help but wonder, with the new developments in Rose?s case, if the fact that Tia is Hispanic and I?m not has any bearing on DCFS?s decision to move her?? (One of Rose?s parents is white and the other parent- Tia?s relative- is Hispanic) ?Is it an issue of race or is it just a coincidence?? If it were about race, it wouldn?t be legal as Gerstenzang continues to explain about American social policy:

?The Multi-Ethnic Placement Act (MEPA) of 1994 said that race could not be the determining factor when placing a child in an adoptive or foster home.? However, the legislation did note that an agency could consider the capacity of the prospective foster or adoptive parents to meet the needs of a child of a different racial, ethnic, or cultural background as one of a number of factors used to determine the best interests of the child.? Because MEPA is a federal legislation, any state that receives federal money for its public or private foster and adoptive agencies (which is every state) must comply with it.? And in 1996, the law was modified to make it even stricter.? The Inter-Ethnic Placement Act, still commonly referred to as MEPA, said that race couldn?t play any role in adoptive placements.? In other words, the law says it is illegal to consider race when placing a child in a foster or adoptive home.? So if a child is available for adoption and several couples are interested in the child, the couples that match the race of the child cannot be given preference on those grounds.?

Aside from the social policies mentioned in the book, it was interesting for me to read about how this family?s experience with foster care evolved.? I won?t tell you how the book ends, you?ll have to read that yourself, but I do highly recommend it.? And speaking of recommended reading, I urge you to read these posts on racism by an adoptive mother (and social worker) whose two sons happen to be black.

Any thoughts from those of you with backgrounds in transracial adoption or fostering?? What is something you wish people knew or that you?ve learned from your experiences??????

Knowing What Online School Could Give

Online schools meet a person?s standard and sometimes, it exceeds the benchmark. This is because distance learning provides the same quality of education as the ones in the campus based colleges and universities. Furthermore, it allows the majority to complete the assigned tasks at their own pace, for they can choose their own schedules. Also, they have the option to attend or not to attend the scheduled classes. Apprentices may access the school?s portal wherever they are so long as there is an internet connection. On the other side, a student is recommended to be present in the scheduled lesson of an online school for at least three to four times per semester especially if he can hardly understand the things found in the module or in the given materials. This helps him to cope up because he can ask questions from his professors and classmates. Plus, the answers can be provided to him immediately.?

Raw Talent

Raw Talent

I love art. I have always loved art. I?m good at art. I have always been good at art. Art came easily to me and I found out, at an early age, I had a knack for it. I could draw, paint, weave, sculpt, and design. I had what they call raw talent.

My name is Iron-head Bradley. They call me iron-head because I?m hardheaded, hard to understand, and hard to get along with, at times. But, I can create some of the most beautiful artwork you will ever see ? and do it with ease.

So, when I went online hoping to learn about designing web sites I had ?promoting-my-own-artwork? in the back of my mind. I was going to get it out there. I wanted to show off all this creativity everyone has been ooh-ing and ahh-ing over. I wanted my own online business and I was willing to do what it took.

Ok, so, you already know I am an artsy kind of guy. What you might not know is that I love ALL things art. If it is art related it is Iron-head Bradley related. I can?t get enough of art or of the art world. It is in the blood. You could say I?m artistically inclined.

Though I didn?t have a website of my own, I could find my way around the internet. I had enough savvy to find the information I was looking for and I had a good idea of what would or wouldn?t work for me. I wish I could say I spent days searching hundreds of sites before I found the ideal site but it popped up only after about 15 searches.

I knew it when I saw it. I knew the site I was looking at would teach me everything I needed to know about selling my artwork online. I had seen a lot of web based art sites and really hated the ones that just dealt with 1 area of art ? like just paintings and nothing else.

The broader minded art sites might include drawing or photography with the paintings. The best art web sites, like the ones I like, are real broad. They can tell you all about drawings, paintings, sculpture, popular art events, art news, art classes and a whole slew of other art topics.

The site I found for building my site is really the ideal. It will teach me how to build my website, get good traffic going to it, and even help me to sell a masterpiece or two. And, all this on a website that focuses on art-based and art related things.

Some web sites are just plain better than others.

Debunking The Mobile Security Myth | Business Computing World

Starbucks, PayPal and Google Wallet have recently announced mobile payment deployments that will drive revenue, boost loyalty and increase customer engagement. While buzz in mobile payments is on the rise, adoption rates are still lagging. And mobile payment solutions through trusted, secure channels will be crucial to driving consumer adoption.

Consumer concern regarding the security of mobile and contactless payments are affecting the growth of the industry and inhibiting mainstream adoption. In order to achieve mainstream adoption of mobile payments in the United States, banks need to collaborate with key industry stakeholders to educate consumers about the safety of this revolutionary payments technology.

According to a survey my company conducted of mobile insiders at this year?s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, 38 percent believe that the leading obstacle to large-scale adoption of mobile payments is the perception that transferring personal financial information over a mobile device is not safe.

Security is not a threat to mobile payments adoption. The threat is the perception that mobile payments are less secure than cash or credit cards.

Banks can eradicate the misperceptions by 1) educating customers about the security of exchanging personal financial information over their mobile device and 2) working to develop industry best practices and foster collaboration and communication between mobile operators, financial institutions and enterprises to drive mass-market adoption of mobile payments.

Consumer education

Education is the solution to gaining consumers? trust and confidence in mobile payments. According to Miranda Roberts of the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF), a global mobile industry trade association, once consumers understand how a mobile transaction works and why they are secure, they gain empowerment and control.

E-commerce platforms were able to take off in the 1990s, after many years of growing pains, because industry players worked together to perfect the platform and ensure its security. Today, consumers have embraced e-commerce because they have become familiar with how it works, trust that it is secure and feel empowered to take control and use it.

Consumers need to understand that losing a mobile wallet is not fraught with the same pitfalls as losing their physical wallet. With many solutions, the ?mobile wallet? is not on the device, but rather is stored in the cloud. So if the device is ever lost the account can be locked and then transferred to a new phone, without the loss of funds.

And unlike the cash in your wallet or purse, your mobile wallet, at the very least, is protected by a PIN. Banks should be responsible for teaching customers about mobile payment security policies and certain techniques like locking their mobile phones and providing educational materials when a customer signs up for mobile transactions.

While smartphones and their respective app stores have been a huge catalyst for the growth of mobile banking and payments in developed markets, this has created a new set of customer behaviors. We now see that customers are increasingly going to the app store over the bank or payment service?s website to download the app.

This is creating two challenges. Firstly, consumers that follow that path expect to be able to enroll via the app on their device. Secondly, users could potentially download an app that is not from the bank or payment provider and hand over credentials to a third party. Both of these situations demonstrates the need for mutual authentication.

Consumers need to be educated to the risks of handing over credentials (just as every email from a bank will include the phrase ?we will never ask you for your PIN?), consumers should expect the app to prove it is genuine. Many online banking services have done this for sometime, and similar mechanisms can be extended to the mobile channel.

Education will be crucial to eradicating the misperceptions around security. Material advances for mobile payments will only come about when banks, operators and merchants can converge on a business model, and with it true industry interoperability, leading to a widely-embraced mobile payments system.

Mobile ecosystem collaboration

As the mobile payments industry continues to evolve and new features, functions and securities are developed, banks need to work together with mobile operators and merchants to ensure that the technology functions as promised.

Rather than debating who owns consumer transaction security, all parties need to work together to establish technological standards and mobile commerce best practices that will protect all ecosystem participants. Creating a trusted and secure technical environment that supports a range of business models, including merchants, banks and mobile operators can only be solidified through collaboration.

This will not only ensure that transactions are secure, but will also lead to industry growth and innovation. Once industry standards become established, mobile payments adoption rates will increase.

Why mainstream adoption for banks?

Global smartphone adoption has exploded and has grown faster than any other consumer technology in history, according to a 2012 Flurry report. Traditional commerce channels will be challenged. However, banks are in a good position to benefit from mobile payments. Mobile payments have the potential to contribute to the bank?s revenue stream.

Banks have the advantage over other players in the mobile commerce ecosystem because they already own the consumers? trust to exchange their personal data and financial information. Engaging with customers directly through their mobile device increases loyalty by providing the added convenience of avoiding long bank lines and creating an extra point of direct contact. Finally, mobile, with its added convenience, creates a cost-effective way to reach the unbanked, the young and emerging affluent and those that are new to credit.

Challenging the consumer misperception that mobile payments are unsafe or lack the appropriate security features should be a priority for the banking industry. Collaborating with key industry stakeholders to ensure mobile payment standards and best practices is crucial to the success and widespread availability of mobile payments.

Mobile has the potential to generate additional revenue, reduce customer churn and tap into new market populations. It?s a channel they can no longer ignore and banks will be an important catalyst for driving mainstream adoption of mobile payments.
