First reader, Male sexual scripts W Aug 8th | Sociology of Sexuality

The article ?Male Sexual Scripts: Intimacy, Sexuality and Pleasure in the Purchase of Commercial Sex? by Sanders brings some very interesting points regarding the transformation of sex worker?s customers into regulars. Stereotypical when we think of a sex industry worker an image of Donna Summers singing hot stuff, or Jodie Foster in the Taxi drivers comes to mind. But in light of these stereotypes Sanders demystifies a few aspect of sex worker consumerism, and the construct of male sexual scripts in these particular situations. Communication, mutual satisfaction, courtship, although sound like qualities in a relationship, are shared qualities within the relationship between sex worker and customer.

I found interesting that in this study, the majority of customers were older men, the majority married or in long term relationships. So how Ironic that these men would seek relationship qualities from they?re sex workers or as its referred to in the article ?The Girlfriend Experience?. Also the idea of sexual encounters with strangers did not appeal to these consumers, this idea seemed to be something which set these regulars apart from the other clients. Mutual satisfaction I found is somewhat an entertaining topic within this article, because of the many ?tricks of the trade? the sex workers know of which gives the impression of mutual satisfaction towards they?re regulars. Trained and practiced professionals, these workers are.

Reading this article did give me a different perspective upon a well kept sex worker?s employment conditions. In fact having regular customers, a safe environment, and even mutual respect for a client would create a climate for work for these sex workers, much different than some experiences of street prostitutes. This article does rouse the question; at least to me, should sex work be legal? I would honestly be in favor of it just because of the improved working conditions, and destigmatization it may bring. But despite my personal views upon the subject, sex work; at least with regulars is perceived in a different light according to this article when compared to other forms of prostitution. Sex work within this article may even be thought as relationship work.
