NCDOT Awards $1.7 million to replace Rocky Ford Road Bridge

A $1.7 million contract has been awarded to Country Boy Landscaping Inc. of Harmony by the N.C. Department of Transportation to replace the Rocky Ford Road bridge over the South Fork of the Catawba River near Newton.

Work can begin as early as April 29, and be completed by December 12, 2014, officials say.

"This bridge replacement reinforces Governor McCrory?s vision to build and maintain a transportation system that is second to none," said NCDOT Division 12 Engineer Mike Holder.

An off-site detour will be set up for the project. Eastbound traffic will take Rocky Ford Road to Hickory-Lincolnton Road to N.C. 10 to Startown Road. Westbound traffic will reverse directions.

The bridge was built in 1956 and is deemed both functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. This does not mean the bridge is unsafe, but there are elements of the bridge that need to be monitored to maintain its structural integrity, and its layout no longer meets current design standards for width, shoulders or railings.

Officials say the new bridge will be able to accommodate larger vehicles.
