SF-Area Train System Keeps Running Amid Talks

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Labor talks are set to resume Tuesday after unions agreed to remain at the bargaining table, keeping a major San Francisco Bay Area transit system running for the time being.

Bay Area Rapid Transit unions had said they would go on strike Tuesday if they didn't reach a contract deal by midnight Monday after extending stalled negotiations from over the weekend.

Local media reports negotiations are scheduled to resume at 1 p.m.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, federal mediator George Cohen announced that BART train service will not be interrupted for the San Francisco Bay Area's estimated 400,000 riders.

BART is the nation's fifth-largest rail system.
