What Did Your Parents Drink? My Mother's Manhattan Recipe The ...

2012_08_03-Manhattan.jpgFive o'clock friends aren't as much the norm these days as they were perhaps in our parents' or even grandparents' time. I think most people remember what their parents or grandparents drank (or still drink), and for food and drink freaks like us, these memories are precious and held dear to our hearts. There are quite a few drinks that made their way into my bar diaries (this is the book I scribble down notes, recipes, and memories of drinks I've had, loved or hated and the memories swirling around them), ranging from hot coffee on the beach to my mom's Manhattan. It started me thinking ? what did/do your parents drink?

2012_08_03-Manhattan03.jpgOn my dad's side there was an Aunt Gin and Aunt Scotch, so you can kind of guess what was poured there. On my mom's side we grew up going to the beach with cousins, aunts and uncles and of course the heads of the family, our Gram and Pop.

Daily rituals included my grandfather, a.k.a. Pop, toting his hand radio and thermos of hot coffee to the beach. No matter how hot the sun, he always said it cooled him down. After a long day at the beach Gram and Aunt Betty, her identical twin, would sip a cold beer on the porch. Though she denies this today, I remember it vividly.

Pop's evening drink was chilled Lambrusco, a jug of Riunite always tucked in the fridge. It's fun for me to see now in 2012 this light- bodied Italian red wine making a comeback. Some things are timeless. Cold beer after the beach is one of the token times I drink it and while I'm not a member of the Riunite on ice fan club, I've been building my cocktail couture in order to carry on another drink tradition bestowed upon me my by my mother.

My mom loves her Manhattan, and anyone who knows her, knows that. It's a ritual ? stirred (NEVER SHAKEN or she sends it back), rocks on the side with one cherry (cherished equally as much as a kid loves the one atop a sundae) nestled in the soft "V" of a chilled martini glass. At my house these glasses lived in the freezer. Like dessert my mom gets her Manhattan treat. It's the classic recipe but she skips the bitters. Always has. This simple tweak makes this recipe my mom's Manhattan.

Did your parents have a daily cocktail hour? Do you remember your dad pouring himself the same Scotch every night? We'd love to know. What did your parents drink?

Companies add 163,000 jobs, but manufacturing falters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. companies hired more workers than expected in July, but continued weakness in the manufacturing sector pointed to sluggish economic growth.

The economic recovery has lost steam in recent months as it has been buffeted by the euro zone debt crisis, a struggling U.S. labor market and concerns over higher taxes and government spending cuts that are set to take place early next year.

Economists said Wednesday's data suggested further slow growth after a 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter, though the economy should avoid recession.

"I don't see any evidence that the weakness is truly feeding on itself at this point but at the same time, there's no obvious spark for the economy to look a lot better in the next few months, either," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics in New York.

The data came as Federal Reserve held off from offering any new stimulus to boost the economy even as it signaled further bond buys could be forthcoming.

Fed officials characterized the economy as having "decelerated somewhat" and repeated their disappointment with the slow pace of progress in bringing down the 8.2 percent unemployment rate.

Since the economy is in "just more of a slower growth environment they're (the Fed) willing to keep any actions until they're needed to a greater extent," said Dwight Johnston, chief economist at the California and Nevada Credit Union League in Ontario, California.

High unemployment and weak consumer confidence took a toll on U.S. automakers as General Motors, Ford and Chrysler Group reported lower-than-expected sales for July.

The ADP National Employment Report showed private employers created 163,000 jobs in July, more than the 120,000 that had been expected though slightly less than June's 172,000. June was originally reported as 176,000.

"The U.S. continues to have consistently positive private sector payroll growth, albeit at a painfully slow rate," said Eric Stein, VP and portfolio manager at Eaton Vance Management in Boston.

The ADP figures come ahead of the government's much more comprehensive labor market report on Friday, which includes both public and private sector employment.

That report is expected to show nonfarm payrolls rose by a modest 100,000 last month, while the unemployment rate is seen staying the same at 8.2 percent.

Economists estimate the labor market needs to create about 125,000 jobs a month to keep the unemployment rate steady, though estimates vary.

Analysts often refer to the ADP report to fine-tune their expectations for the payrolls numbers, though it is not always accurate in predicting the outcome.

The ADP report has differed from the government's private jobs number by an average of about 50,000 so far this year, said Cooper Howes, economist at Barclays.

If that continues, it would be in line with a forecast for a gain of 100,000 nonfarm payrolls last month, said Howes.

MANUFACTURING WANES

U.S. stocks were modestly lower in mid-afternoon as investors digested the Fed statement, while the dollar strengthened and Treasuries prices retested session lows.

Two separate reports on manufacturing - previously a tent pole of the recovery - showed the sector continued to falter.

A report from the Institute for Supply Management showed manufacturing activity contracted for a second month in a row in July as new orders improved modestly but employment dropped to a 2-1/2-year low.

ISM's index of national factory activity inched up to 49.8 from 49.7 in June, shy of economists' expectations for 50.2. A reading below 50 shows contraction in the sector.

Forward-looking new orders remained in contraction territory but improved to 48 from 47.8. The gauge of employment slid to its lowest since December 2009 at 52 from 56.6.

Exports continued to tumble and were down at 46.5 from 47.5. The index has lost 13 points since February.

A survey from Markit showed manufacturing fared slightly better than ISM indicated as the sector managed to grow, though the pace was the slowest in nearly three years.

The final Markit U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index fell to 51.4 from 52.5 in June as it was also hurt by falling export orders.

Overseas, manufacturing activity in the euro zone contracted for the 11th straight month in July as the downturn deepened. As well, China's official measure of factory activity fell to an eight-month low.

Separate data showed U.S. construction spending rose modestly in June as investment in new homes and home improvement countered a drop-off in public works projects funded by the federal government.

Another report showed lending to small businesses fell in June to the lowest level since October with the Thomson Reuters/PayNet Small Business Lending Index falling to 98.5 from 103.8 in May.

Muay Thai Gloves: A Must for Muay Thai Sport

Muay Thai Gloves point to a country for a particular kind of sport (that is, Muay Thai) and the country is known as Thailand. Nevertheless, Muay Thai has crossed the border of its country of origin and has become popular in different parts of the world. Muay Thai may appear similar to Boxing for some reasons, but this is a kind of sport which is better to be accepted as mixed martial arts sport. Players of Muay Thai require special type of gloves for several reasons:

They want to lessen the force they receive from the opponents.
It is important to save their fist and wrist.
hey pay attention to the fact that their opponents are not seriously injured.

Usually, Muay Thai gloves and common boxing gloves are almost similar. Sometimes, Muay Thai players use common boxing gloves. It should still be noted that players must have such gloves in Muay Thai sport which have greater flexibility. This is for the reason that players need to stretch their hand and grab the player of the opposite team. This is again to suggest that Muay Thai creates chances for body contact and knee strikes are common. Hence, special kind of gloves should be used for Muay Thai sport.
As hitting at several points is a part of the sport and participants generally go for huge kicking or punching the direct appendages, different kinds of gloves have become prominent and necessary. There are three categories in Muay Thai gloves:

Bag gloves
Training gloves and
Fighting gloves.

Muay Thai gloves are available in several colors, usually, red or blue. During a competition, the judges who offer the scoring can be helped. These gloves are different in size and in weight too. Lace up gloves are for the professional boxers, and in this case, security is assured and fitting is nice and comfortable. It is not easy to wear gloves of this type and the trainers do assist the boxers at this point. During training period, boxers use loop and hook gloves which one can wear easily.

Gloves which are heavier are chosen by the players when they practice, because one should take chance of getting better prepared by increasing one's strength. Gloves with greater padding at the front side are known as bag gloves and those are also good during training. On the other hand, players at the fighting ground should take light gloves which must be flexible simultaneously.

NJ, 12. girl grabs wheel when grandfather dies

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? As the pickup truck she was riding in careened down the road at 80 mph, 12-year-old Miranda Bowman knew one thing: She had to stop it.

Miranda's grandfather, Paul Parker, was driving her home Tuesday from an afternoon of go-karting when he told Miranda he didn't feel well. He asked her to keep talking to keep him alert. She asked about things she spied on the side of the road ? the racetrack, the unfinished bleachers. A few seconds later Miranda heard her grandfather's head hit the driver's side window.

Parker, 63, had just died of a heart attack, and his foot was pressing on the accelerator.

"He was like, 'Miranda I'm scared, I've never felt like this before,'" Miranda said during a phone interview from her Burlington Township home. "I was scared because he would never say that. He was a tough cookie."

After a "30-second freak-out" during which she cried, "Pop-pop, Pop-pop, Pop-pop," Miranda realized the car was speeding up and drifting toward the side of the road. She undid her seat belt and tried to call 911 on her cellphone but she wasn't getting any service. She then climbed underneath the steering wheel and pressed her hand on the brake.

But even though the car was slowing down, it was still hurtling down the road.

Miranda popped up from underneath the steering wheel, wedged her right foot under her left and pressed on the brake as hard as she could.

"I was going to put it in park and I thought we were going too fast," she said. "I thought it would do the fish tail or flip over."

Instead she grabbed onto the steering wheel and tried to find a place where she could force the car to stop.

"I was looking around and thought, "Should I go into the corn field, should I keep going?'" she said. "Down the street was a red light and I saw woods. I said I can't hurt anybody else, I can only hurt myself,'" by putting the car into trees, she said.

Miranda said the pickup truck ran into a few trees. She tried to open the door, but it wouldn't budge. She wasn't able to smash out the window. She finally spied a broken part of the passenger's side door and kicked it open.

A woman driving behind the car saw it swerving and called 911 while following it. Miranda said she fell to her knees and wailed after getting out of the car. She then called her mother and grandmother.

"She said, 'Mom, we were in an accident and Pop-pop is dead,'" said Miranda's mother, Stephanie Bowman. "I keep thinking to myself, 'I don't know if I could have watched that happen to him and reacted the way she did.'"

Stephanie Bowman said the family is in shock from all that happened. Paul Parker was an active man who played fast-pitch baseball and started go-karting in his 60s. It was the first time Miranda watched her grandfather go-kart; she had long asked him to take her to the track.

"I'm very grateful to have my daughter be OK but losing my father at the same time, I'm just numb from the two emotions battling each other out," Stephanie Bowman said.

Miranda said she knew how to react in an emergency situation because her father is an EMT. She also said she watches a lot of "Law and Order" on television and thought about what might happen on the show. And she always watches what people do while driving a car, so she knew to head for the brake.

Miranda said she wants to be a sign language interpreter when she is an adult.

"I'm very amazed by her, very impressed by her," Stephanie Bowman said. "Where she got it from God only knows. He was her angel that day."

Romney lauds Polish spirit, governance, in Warsaw

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney says Poland's economy is a model of small government and free enterprise that other nations should emulate as they struggle with recession. It was an unspoken criticism of President Barack Obama's policies in the wake of the worst recession in decades.

The former Massachusetts governor, wrapping up an overseas trip, says that rather than heeding "the false promise" of a government-dominated economy, Poland "sought to stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade and live within its means" after the end of the Communist era. He made the observation in remarks as he neared the end of a week-long trip marred by his own stumbles on the world stage.

Romney returns to campaigning in the United States with appearances Thursday in Colorado.
