Higher-ed lags on 'sustainable' investing - Philanthropy North Carolina

Investment in environmental, social and corporate governance by college and university endowments, an investment strategy those institutions pioneered in the 1970s with anti-apartheid campaigns, is less widespread than it may seem, a new study says.

Higher-education endowents, which represent over $400 billion in combined assets under management, also show a ?general lack of transparency? in their practices in environmental, social and governance investing, or ESG, says the study, which was commissioned and funded by the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute and conducted by Tellus Institute.

?Historically, endowments were groundbreaking institutional investors that addressed social? and environmental considerations in their investments far earlier than others,? Jon Kukomnik, executive director of the IRRC Institute, says in a statement. ?Our findings indicate that today?s endowments no longer are leaders in the institutional ESG investment arena.?

The study, ?Environmental, Social and Governance Investing by College and University Endowments in the United States,? is based on an analysis of ?sustainable? investing by education endowments, including the aggregation of?multiple survey data sets,? plus new primary research.

The main form of sustainable investing activity by higher-ed endowments tends to remain ?single-issue negative screening? of public-equity portfolios such as tobacco or targeted divestment from the Sudan, the study says.

And while a growing number of surveys and reporting mechanisms have emerged in the last 10 years to obtain inforation about sustainable and responsible endowment management, it says, a ?widespread lack of independent verification of self-reported data exists? and sustainable investment transparency ?remains poor.?

Investment policies by college and university endowments are ?remarkably opaque, even at some state-funded universities,? the study says.

The education community also is ?largely is absent from the national and global institutional investment networks,? it says.

Not a single higher-education endowment is among the 900? signatories of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, for example, and only one is a member of the Council of Institutional Investors, the leading U.S. association of institutional investors, the study says.

It also finds issues that relate to ?confusion about ESG semantics.?

Some colleges and universities ?claim to be making sustainable investments when those investments do not meet the standard definitions of such investments,? the study says.

Confusion about the semantics of sustainable investing has resulted in ?problematic claims and misclassification of investments,? the study says.

And despite considerable focus on proxy-voting recommendations, an effort that encourages endowments to be more active and engaged shareholders by using their proxy power, many colleges are shifting investments from publicly-traded securities to ?indirect investments in commingled vehicles and more opaque, illiquid investments in alternative asset classes,? the study says.

Traditional equity investing, including proxy voting, represents a decreasing portion of many endowments, it says.

?The endowment community exhibits a weak understanding of ESG investing strategies, trends, opportunities, and language,? the study says.

While sustainable investing is not widespread in the higher-ed endowment community, it says, some innovative investing programs could serve as models.

Those include Middlebury College and Dickinson College, which have invested in a Sustainability Investments Initiative that includes clean-tech investments, as well as the Omidyar Tufts Microfinance Fund at Tufts University.

And misperceptions about sustainable investing ?open immense learning opportunities for the endowment community,? the study says, ?though a much great openness to discussions of sustainable and responsible investing is needed.?

Thread: I think I'm possessed! - Family Woodworking

I know for sure I've been very distracted for the past couple of weeks!!! LOML and I have talked for a while now about doing a genealogy tree to see what we can find. She doesn't know much about her paternal family tree and I've lost track of so many uncles, aunts and cousins they're too numerous to count. Some old friends we hadn't seen in 14 years came for a visit two weeks ago and they are very heavy into researching their trees. Their visit is all it took to kick start my endeavor.

So, one trip to Office Depot for a copy of Family Tree Maker, setting up an account on Ancestry.com and now I'm more cross-eyed than ever from being glued to the computer! It's been an interesting journey in just the two weeks I've been working on the research. Find a little something, hit a wall; go a little different direction, find a little more; etc., etc., etc. A person who is working on a different family tree had links into some of the people who tied to ours, as well as information about some relationships that clarified a few points. I won't go into any detail at this point, but there is one discovery we'll be following up on in person in a couple more weeks.

I'm getting to a point where I need to budget certain hours for research and other hours to shop time and make myself stick to the budget. Easier said than done at times. I got on another lead this morning and, after following it for what I thought was a short time, an entire hour had evaporated!

Energy Stocks on Sale: Buy the Dip ? Investing Daily

As the global economy slows, the energy sec?tor has suffered a selloff as anxious investors fret over weakening demand. In recent months, West Texas Intermediate crude, the US benchmark for oil prices, fell from a high of about $110 per barrel to its current level of about $85 per barrel, while the Eu?ropean benchmark Brent crude dropped from around $130 per barrel to $100 per barrel.

Despite these concerns, reports from the US Depart?ment of Energy and the International Energy Agen?cy show global reserves of crude oil are down, even though energy demand is now projected to grow faster than previously estimated.

So this moment of weakness offers an excellent op?portunity to pick up shares of energy-related com?panies such as Weatherford International (NYSE: WFT), which is currently trading near the bottom of its 52-week range.

In addition to a sluggish macroeconomic environ?ment, Weatherford has also been navigating a tax accounting storm. In March, the company reported it would be forced to restate earnings as far back as 2007 due to an estimated $500 million in tax accounting er?rors related to weak internal controls. That marks the second time the company has had to contend with tax issues in less than a year.

While these tax problems have understandably shaken investors? confidence in management?and claimed the job of the company?s chief accounting of?ficer?they aren?t expected to have a hugely materi?al impact on the company. And malfeasance doesn?t seem to be an issue here. Rather, with 543 subsidiar?ies and other assorted operations spanning the globe, the errors seem to stem from a misinterpretation of ac?counting rules. Tax reporting has also been complicat?ed by the fact that Weatherford has changed its coun?try of domicile twice over the past decade, moving from the US to Bermuda and then to Switzerland.

Nevertheless, Weatherford actually has a lot going for it.

The company is the leading supplier of artificial lift equipment, which is used to increase the flow of liq?uids from wells, boosting production from mature wells and allowing more residual liquids to be re?moved. The technology is also useful in extracting oil from unconventional wells, which are often in low-pressure environments. Additionally, the company has keenly focused on offshore oil projects around the world, which is a corner of the oil market that?s garner?ing increasing attention from major oil producers.

Weatherford has built a strong international busi?ness, particularly in Latin America where there have been a number of new oil discoveries, such as the vast Libra field off the coast of Brazil. The company also has a growing presence in Africa, which has become an increasingly attractive market following a series of major oil and gas finds over the past decade. In the Middle East, the company recently signed an $850 million long-term contract to provide services in Iraq.

Weatherford?s revenue growth has outpaced its in?dustry peers over the past few quarters, which enabled earnings to jump 70 percent in the first quarter from a year ago. Meanwhile, shares of the company?s stock are trading at a discount on both a price-to-book and price-to-sales basis.

All it would take to spur the next ascent in Weath?erford?s shares is a slight improvement in the glob?al economy and energy prices. In the meantime, the company is also an attractive takeover target for its larger competitors, such as Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB) or even Halliburton (NYSE: HAL), which would love to get a hold of Weatherford?s proprietary technologies and book of business.
