Q: What do hip hop artist Usher and President Bill Clinton have in common?
A: They've both converted to veganism to embrace the health benefits of eating a plant-based diet.
If you're interested in eating less meat?or no meat at all?October is your month! Monday is World Vegetarian Day, the official start of Vegetarian Awareness Month.
And if you're already vegetarian or vegan?spread the love! Share your best recipes for meat-free meals and snacks, and we'll feature them on Meatless Mondays throughout the month.
Swapping beef for beans just once a week might not only be good for you, it might be good for the Earth, too. A recently released Oxfam America report says families that make this small change at the dinner table can help conserve the world's water resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Eating less beef decreases livestock production, according to Oxfam. And when fewer livestock are farmed, less water is used and less cow toots are released into the environment. Methane produced by livestock is responsible for 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The report, The Food Transformation (available in the media box attached to this article), says that if urban households in America, the United Kingdom, Spain and Brazil offered a vegetarian option once a week, they could each save the equivalent of 17 bathtubs full of water and together reduce methane equal to taking 3.7 million cars off the road.
A healthier you could mean a healthier world.
Email your favorite recipes for meatless meals and snacks to michelle.mowad@patch.com. Include a pretty picture, too, if you like and where you live! We'll offer vegetarian dishes to try each week on Meatless Monday.

At the time, all I had to share about the 8-acre ?pedestrian-oriented, energy-efficient, multigenerational neighborhood? were early renderings and a few key highlights (Community composting facilities! P-Patches! Kayak storage! Minimal parking spaces!). Perhaps one of the more intriguing aspects of Grow ??geared to be the largest solar-ready planned community in Washington, by the way ??is the fact that it?s the first residential project in the U.S. to be endorsed by One Planet Living's?Communities program, a rigorous, 10-tier certification program developed by U.K. nonprofit?BioRegional Development Group?and WWF International?that focuses on the greenness of neighborhoods?instead of individual homes.?
Now, three of the Asani-developed community?s first three prefab panelized model?homes ??the Everett, the Aria, and the Ocean?? have been installed and are open for tours. These three prefab lovelies will be later joined by two additional home designs, the Tallis and the Dashwood, and a series of rowhouse rentals dubbed the Copper. In total, there will eventually be 50 single-family homes and 81 rental apartments spread throughout the development in ?micro-neighborhoods? ??small clusters of buildings centered around shared green spaces and community gardens that are connected by a network of trails winding throughout the community.?Everett, Ocean, and Aria exteriors
?
Davis, a U.K.-born Frank Gehry alum, relayed to me in an email now that the three first model homes are complete as part of the first 3-acre phase, work will begin next month on the larger second phase: two 10-unit rowhouse apartments and 21 single-family homes. In future phases, the remaining homes and a community center will be constructed.
Prices for the homes begin in the low $300,000s. This is on the affordable side of things considering Bainbridge Island's median home value is $539,000. At 1,846 square feet, the Everett is the largest of the model homes and features three bedrooms, a mudroom (very important in this geographic location), a study, and playroom/office space. The 1,573-square-foot Ocean includes two master bedrooms (or one master bedroom and two smaller rooms upstairs) and roof deck. Designed for downsizing couples or small families, the 1,549-square-foot Aria includes two bedrooms, a study, and a master closet large enough to turn into a nursery or home office.
?
Each super-insulated (R-38 for the walls and R-60 for the ceilings) home includes a detached storage shed, energy-efficient appliances including induction cook ranges, heat-recovery ventilators, low-flow fixtures, ductless mini-split heat pumps, high-performance windows from Marvin, low-VOC paints and finishes, and the use of locally sourced, sustainable materials throughout. Each home is also (mostly) PVC-free. Plus, to achieve net-zero status, there?s the option to install grid-tied photovoltaic arrays ??manufactured in Washington by?BlueFrog Solar, nonetheless ??to the roofs.Aria interior

The overall vibe of Grow Community is low-impact, low-key, and centered around ?five-minute living." In addition to an emphasis on community gardening, residents will have access to both car share (Nissan Leafs, natch) and bike share programs. The shops, cafes, and other amenities of Winslow (AKA downtown Bainbridge Island) are just a short bike ride or walk away ??thus, the ?five-minute living? concept ??and downtown Seattle's Pier 52 can be reached via a 35-minute ferry ride from Winslow. Having done the Bainbridge/Seattle ferry trek a handful of times before, I can say there?s no better way to decompress after a long day in the office than crossing the Puget Sound during sunset. It?s nothing short of magical.?
Overall, the goal of Grow Community is two-fold:
?
? To create an intentional urban community that enhances the quality of life of its residents by making sustainable lifestyle choices both accessible and cost effective.
? To demonstrate that net-zero energy homes, built with sustainable materials can be constructed and sold at a price point that is replicable on a large scale.
?
Lots more Grow-related goodness over at the community?s official website where you can learn more about the homes themselves, familiarize yourself with the concept of One Planet Living, view a site plan of the development, and keep up date via an excellent and mighty informative blog. And if you live in the area and intrigued, you can also arrange for a tour of the model homes. I'll be sure to check in with this remarkable project as it continues grows.?
Is there a notable green residential building project in Washington that you'd liked to see featured in an upcoming installment of "Evergreen Homes?" Tell me about it in the comments section!

The Curiosity rover team announced yesterday that they'd found the mission's first potentially habitable environment on Mars: an ancient river bed. But why do they think flowing water created the formation?
What exactly did the rover find?
Curiosity's telephoto camera snapped shots of three rocky outcrops not far from the rover's landing site inside Gale Crater. One of them, called "Goulburn", had been excavated by the rover's own landing gear. The other two were natural outcrops dubbed "Link" and "Hottah". All three, and Hottah in particular, were made of thin layers of rock that had been cemented together.
When the rover zoomed in, it saw rounded pebbles in the conglomerates and in surrounding gravel that were fairly large ? up to a few centimetres in diameter. On Earth, roundness is a tell-tale sign that rocks have been transported a long way, since their angular edges got smoothed out as they tumbled. The Mars rocks are too big to have been blown by wind, so the team concluded it must have been flowing water. This dovetails with orbital images hinting that the rover landed in an alluvial fan, a feature that is formed on Earth by water flows.
Let's not be H2O-centric here. Could the liquid have been something other than water?
The chemical evidence for hydrated minerals at Gale Crater and elsewhere means water is definitely the top contender ? although one team member likes to joke that, for all we know, the liquid could have been beer.
Some Mars scientists have suggested quickly evaporating carbon dioxide ice could have triggered rockslides, forming gullies elsewhere on the planet, but that's a less popular theory, says team member Sanjeev Gupta of Imperial College London. Also, such bursts of CO2 vapour probably couldn't have transported these rocks all the way from the rim of Gale Crater, where the river seems to have begun, adds Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.
It's possible the water could have been quite salty or briny, which would make it more viscous. It could have been slushy or icy as well. "Whether pure water or salty water, it would all behave similarly in terms of sediment transport," says team member Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona.
How long ago was the water there?
On Earth, the most reliable way to measure the ages of alluvial fans is by radiocarbon dating ? but that requires organic carbon, which we haven't yet found on Mars. And even if it found some, Curiosity's on-board chemistry lab isn't quite up to the task. The best Mars scientists can do is estimate the age of the surrounding surface based on counting craters. On a large scale, the older an area is, the more craters it likely accumulates over time.
"We think what we're looking at is several billion years old," Dietrich says of the region around Gale Crater. "How to get better than that, I don't know. This is a common discussion point."
How deep was the stream? How fast was it flowing?
Dietrich calculated that it was probably between ankle and hip deep, and flowed at about a metre per second.
How can he possibly know that?
The key was knowing the size of the rocks: "Up until now, no one knew what the size of the material in the bed was," Dietrich says. "That affects when grains start to move and the velocity. It propagates through all the calculations."
The equations for calculating river depth on Earth apply just as well on Mars, despite Mars' weaker gravity. The amount of water needed to push a rock down a slope depends on the weight of the rock and the steepness of the slope. The team knew the slope's angle, at least roughly, based on measurements of Gale Crater taken from orbit. Curiosity's new images gave size estimates for the rocks, which translated to a range of depths. Then Dietrich could plug the depth into equations for flow speed, which do depend on gravity. The river flows more slowly on Mars than it would on Earth, he says.
Its speed could change depending on how cold the water was ? cold water is about twice as viscous as warm water. Another uncertainty is how dirty the water was, since carrying a lot of small particles would slow down the stream. With the data we have now, though, a metre per second is a pretty safe estimate, Dietrich says. "Based on a mixture of hydraulic calculations and field experience, this is typically what we would find."
What does this mean for life?
The team's project scientist, John Grotzinger of Caltech, called the river bed the rover's first potentially habitable environment.
"But these fluvial environments aren't the best habitable environments," Gupta says. "They're not the best at preserving evidence of life." That's part of why the rover has already left the outcrops behind and is now heading first toward a spot called Glenelg, where three different rock types come together, and then full speed towards the mountain in the middle of the crater, alternately called Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp. Orbital images show tantalising evidence of clays in the mountain's layers, and clays are known to better preserve organics.
"The longer-term aim is to get to Mount Sharp," Gupta says. "That's always on our mind. We can't get too distracted."
But if they run across something else that's more exciting on the way, might they change course?
"Absolutely!" says Williams. "This mission is responsive to discoveries."

Tough economic forces and lousy summer weather seem to be determined to try and take charge of the wholesale energy supply market. Prices tumbled throughout the middle of June to new lows. Annual gas prices are now 15% lower than the same time last year, while annual power prices fell to a two-year low and are 22% down year-on-year.
Falling power prices dragged annual spark spreads down 7% to ?3.4/MWh, and even that reliable stalwart coal is having a hard time of things, with slipping prices buffering the fall of dark spreads slightly to a ?17.9/MWh premium to spark spreads.
So what's been setting off these price crashes? Well, concerns about debt in the Eurozone nations hasn't helped. Greece lurches from crisis to crisis and even the election of a new government is doing little to allay fears about its long-term future. But it's slowing economic growth in the US and China that has really pushed international energy markets downwards. Brent crude oil tumbled to $97.6/bl, its lowest level since January 2011, and annual API coal dropped to a new 20-month low of $95.4/t.
However, all of this is good news for consumers. While we may be missing out on that 'BBQ summer' the forecasters promised us, both domestic and commercial end-users have seen energy prices drop in real terms. A fall in inflation has also helped to stabilise the retail market, but the big difference has been at the pumps, where motorists have finally started to see the numbers on the forecourts going down instead of up. This, combined with lower electricity and gas costs, has given the British economy a short respite, during which it has a chance to push up production and keep the fragile heart of UK PLC beating for a while longer.
Biomass - holding the fort?
Ironically, it's been the biomass market that has held the fort. Despite biomass contracts dropping, with prices for 2013 down 1% to ?88.5/t, prices are still around 6% higher than this time last year. They've recovered from their four-year low and are at their highest level for five months. This boost has been helped in no small measure with the approval of the plans for a 40MW staw-fuelled biomass plant in Snetterton, Norfolk, which have finally been given the go-ahead.
The weather outside is frightful...
The real headline grabber throughout June and into July has been the atrocious weather the UK has experienced. Lower than average June temperatures and storm after storm has resulted in a rise in UK gas demand. Supply peaked at 223.1mcm on 11th June, in the middle of the bad weather. Industry watchers believe that the unseasonably bad weather has encouraged many people to do something they wouldn't normally do in June - they turned the heating up. The result was that although the national system decreased 0.1%, the regional system climbed 2.2%. To date, summer demand (measured from April 1st) was down 7.8% on the national system but up a staggering 31.1% on the regional system, compared to the same time last year.
What this indicates is that while gas demand for power generation is down year-on-year, consumption by households and small businesses has risen. This means that gas consumption is acting as a barometer for the productiveness of the UK economy and while the big users may be struggling, homes and businesses are continuing to ride out the worst of the economic storm, putting a more positive face on what has been a difficult few months.
How prices will fare in the next few weeks will depend on three things - the resolution (or otherwise) of the Eurozone crisis, and the economic condition of the US and China. If they start to wobble you could see prices start to climb back up again.
Graham Paul - Services Delivery Director (EDW Technology). EDW have a long history developing, implementing and supporting best-of-breed software solutions. Since 2000, their electricity pricing system - part of ERS (Energy Retail Suite) has enabled energy retailers with powerful and highly competitive IT systems, transforming customer experience, improving business efficiency, reducing costs and boosting profits.

Among all foreign browsers of Realtor.com, Canadians rank No. 1, routinely checking out Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, according to data provided by the website.
By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor
With many U.S. consumers still lukewarm about buying into the American dream, Canadians, Chinese and Mexicans are burning up Realtors? cell phones and emails, grabbing up swank vacation nooks, secure places to stash their cash, or just old-fashioned bargains.
Foreign purchases of U.S. homes have climbed by 24 percent since 2011, reports the National Association of Realtors, reaching $82.5 billion in total annual sales,?and helping brace once-creeky markets like Miami.
?They love the U.S. because their money is safe here. Even if they only break even on a property, they know they can get their money out,? said Matey Veissi, broker-owner with Veissi & Associates in Miami. She estimates that 35 to 40 percent of her firm?s business is conducted with foreign buyers. ?South Beach and Miami Beach are popular with the Brazilians ? they like the water. The west coast of Florida is popular with the Europeans because it?s quieter. The Canadians like the middle of the state.?
But even as residential prices perk up in many U.S. cities, international interest in American homes is expected to hold firm ? simply because with many international buyers, it?s not all about the dollar signs, said Jed Smith, an NAR economist.
As with some American homebuyers, it?s also about status.
?Foreigners purchase for a variety of reasons: trophy homes, desire to put money in the U.S. for safety, desire to have a place to visit for vacation, desire for a rental unit,? Smith said, adding that about half of those buyers move to the United States. ?These factors ? tend to dampen the effects of changes in total overall cost."
Case in point: Miami, where home values bumped 2.1 percent higher from June to July, according to the S&P Case-Shiller index released Tuesday.??That?s very much an international city that tends to attract people from a variety of places who also have quite a bit of money and who are looking to make a statement,? Smith said.
Through March 2011 to March this year, Canadians led the international housing invasion, comprising 24 percent?of foreign sales, or about $16 billion in collective purchases, Smith said.
For Canadians, proximity is the prime enticement to buy American and many seem drawn to the balmy breezes of Florida, said Steve Berkowitz, CEO of Realtor.com, operator Move, Inc.
?A second home in the U.S. provides a relatively inexpensive way for Canadians to escape snowy weather and below-freezing temperatures,? Berkowitz said.
Among all foreign browsers of Realtor.com, Canadians rank No. 1, routinely checking out Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, according to data provided by the website.
?One of the things about international purchases: Once that community gets established in that area, it tends to attract like people from that community,? said NAR?s Smith. ?So the Canadians have been coming to those areas for quite a while.?
Chinese consumers also are frequent visitors to Realtor.com, virtually exploring neighborhoods in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the site reports. Chinese comprised 11 percent of all international transactions from March 2011 to this past March ? forming the second-largest group of foreign buyers and spending about $9 billion during that span on American housing, according to NAR.
Income levels largely drive the consumer tastes of Chinese house hunters, experts say.
?On the West Coast, you might have five or 10 families from China who pool their resources to purchase something, have a student live in it and then rent out the rooms. At the end of the student?s time, hopefully they sell the place for a capital gain. Those are the middle-class Chinese, buying for an investment,? Smith said. ?There are also a fair number of wealthy people in China who are buying for a major second home.?
In San Francisco, upscale high-rises that have attracted venture capitalists and members of the San Francisco 49ers now are drawing affluent Chinese residents, said Realtor Matt Fuller. Such plush condo buildings include Millennium Tower ? which boasts three sets of concierges and a salt-water pool ? and One Rincon Hill where, he said, prices can touch seven figures. Those exclusive, residential spires are relatively new to the Bay Area, he added.
?It?s hard to say if the number of Chinese buyers is increasing because we have more interest (from China) or if we?re noticing this trend because this is a style of construction and a level of service that we didn?t used to have here,? Fuller said.
Those elite addresses are fancied by British buyers as well, Fuller said.?Online shoppers from the United Kingdom comprise one of the thickest clumps of foreign lookie-loos at Realtor.com. They?ve also been checking out Los Angeles, Orlando and Las Vegas, according to the site?s stats.
McMansions favoured
And when they do peruse American real estate online, the Brits ? like many other Europeans ? tend to click on larger ?McMansions,? said Jed Kolko, chief economist at Trulia. After reviewing user trends at that real estate website, Kolko noticed that Dutch consumers check out the biggest American abodes, with a median size of 2,400 square feet, followed closely by U.K. consumers, whose targeted homes have a median size of 2,342 square feet.
Americans who use Trulia examine properties with?a median size of 1,854 square feet.
?The rest of the world might make fun of Americans for our big portions, big homes and big butts, but it turns out that most foreigners look at bigger homes than what most Americans look at ? among all searches of U.S. homes on Trulia,? Kolko wrote in a blog last week.
By comparison, Mexican consumers who tap Trulia?s listings are focused on even smaller homes ? those with a median size of 1,794 square feet, Kolko reported.?
But Mexicans currently spend about $6.5 billion a year on U.S. homes, NAR says, ranking Mexico at No. 3 among the nations that lately have been gobbling up American properties.
?They are focused heavily on proximity, namely Texas,? Smith said. ?They?re buying mainly for safety as well as for a better environment. ?There?s been quite an influx of Mexican money into this country in recent years just based on the safety issues in that country.?
On Realtor.com, Mexicans have been inspecting homes in San Antonio and Laredo, Texas, the site reports.
And in Miami, one Mexican client taught Realtor Veissi just how careful people in that country have become about protecting their monetary secrets. Although Veissi was representing that Mexican family in its house search, her description of the artful process sounds like it involved all the cunning of a big-stakes poker game.
?They started with a price point of $250,000 and asked me about the price of eggs and milk here,? Veissi said. ?They led me to believe they were on a budget. Then they gradually increased the price (for their hunt), which I found interesting, and ended up with a home at close to $1 million.
?They don?t want to tell you a lot about their finances unless they know you better. Initially, they didn?t trust me. Most Americans don?t have any patience with that,? she added. ?But when you develop the relationship, you get the entire family, their friends, everyone they?re connected with (as future clients). It just takes a long time to develop that trust.??

First class last night
We had our first class PS MAPP class last night. I have to admit I was dreading the classes. I am VERY experienced in fostercare and the thought of sitting there from 6-9 once a week for 10 weeks "learning" stuff I have known for years and even taught others was completely not appealing. Plus hubby had luke warn feet. Plus, stupid people irritate me (and the last time we did the class its like they picked people up by bus from stupidville) and I had already had an irritating day.
I am happy to report, I really enjoyed the class. I don't feel like I learned anything new but I really like how they teach it. I was super impressed with how much the training has changed and become more relevant to the social/emotional stuff. It does seem to me that they really pushed the idea of older kids (like teens). The movie we watched was 8 teens, the case study we used was a teen. The excersise in the beginning where you went around and tried to find your "match," most of the kids were teens. It was interesting to me to hear the uninitiated's thoughts on things. In one excersise they thought there was no way a 14 year old girl should ever go home. The family history was horrible but all mom did was smoke pot and drink with her in the living room and dad broke her arm because she was sleeping with his brother. It sounded like a bit of drug and alcohol counseling and some therapy for dad would be good enough for RU to me. The group was absolutely horrified.
Despite my expectations, the group of trainees was not overly stupid. Out of maybe 24 people, I noticed only 2 exceptionally annoyingly stupid folks and maybe 4 that were a little on the simple side. At least 3 other couples appeared to be of our age/social class/interests. 2 lesbian couples and one or two singles.
DH is very interested now. You has a giving heart. I know he is somewhat opposed to the idea of all the extra work but my guess is that he is hooked.
Annoyed with the politically correct words they use. For instance, this week we will be doing 3 hours of "road work" and we put questions they are not ready to answer "in the parking lot." But I can live with it as long as I do not get kicked out for rolling my eyes!

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian authorities on Thursday sent text messages over cell phones nationwide with a message for rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's regime: "Game over."
The messages signed by the Syrian Arab Army also urged the rebels to surrender their weapons and warned the countdown to evict foreign fighters has begun. The texts appear to be part of the regime's psychological battle against the rebels, but are highly unlikely to have any effect on fighters intent on toppling Assad.
Syrians say they began receiving the messages a day after rebels bombed a military command center in Damascus ? a major security breach of the heavily guarded capital that highlighted the regime's growing vulnerability in the face of a rebellion growing in confidence and capabilities.
People with cellular subscriptions received the messages while those with prepaid phones did not, residents in the Syrian capital said.
Despite the high-profile attack, the two sides have been locked in a stalemate after 18 months of conflict. Activists say the death toll since the conflict began in March last year has recently topped 30,000, with nearly two-thirds of the casualties reported in the past six months.
In August, Syrian army helicopters dropped leaflets warning rebels in Damascus to hand over their arms and seek amnesty.
In Geneva on Thursday, the United Nations' refugee agency said the U.N. and its partners are launching a revised appeal for $487.9 million to help support Syrian refugees. It said 2,000 to 3,000 refugees are crossing into neighboring countries each day.
The UNHCR said 294,000 Syrian refugees are registered or awaiting registration in neighboring countries.
Earlier Thursday, a Lebanese TV station broadcast footage showing Syrian government troops driving rebels from a building they had briefly occupied a day earlier after a double car bomb attack struck army headquarters in Damascus.
The images from Lebanon's Al Manar TV station further demonstrated the scale of the security breach of the heavily guarded capital by rebels determined to topple the Assad regime.
The fighters detonated car bombs that engulfed the army headquarters in flames, followed by three hours of gunbattles in and around the compound Wednesday.
The government said four army guards were killed and 14 people were wounded, including civilians and military personnel.
The carefully orchestrated attacks were the most dramatic security breach in the center of the capital Damascus since July, when rebels detonated explosives inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.
They highlighted the regime's growing vulnerability, even as the 18-month battle to bring down Assad is locked in a stalemate.
Al Manar's correspondent Youssef Shaeito said he accompanied Syrian troops on Wednesday as they stormed the compound after the explosions. In an interview with the station, he said he saw the bodies of three gunmen inside, suggesting clashes between government forces and rebels inside the building.
The station is owned by the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group, a strong ally of Assad's regime. Syrian state-run media, however, reported only on the car bombs, omitting any mention of clashes inside the building.
Exclusive Al Manar footage showed a group of soldiers surrounding a building at the compound and shooting at targets inside. Shortly afterward, a pickup truck with a heavy machine gun mounted on it joins the battle.
Eventually, dozens of troops are seen storming the building and going up the stairs from one room to the other amid smoke. The bodies of three gunmen are seen on the floor, one of them with an apparent suicide belt tied around his waist.
Shaeito said that in the mayhem following the explosions, gunmen had infiltrated the army command headquarters, taken up positions and begun shooting at soldiers. He said the gunmen "moved from floor to floor and room to room" and tossed grenades at soldiers outside.
He said it took soldiers about 45 minutes before they were able to storm the building.
International diplomacy has failed to stop the bloodshed in Syria. Syrian activists said more than 305 people were killed across Syria on Wednesday, making it one of the deadliest days since the conflict began.
They included at least 40 people whose bodies were discovered in a suburb of Damascus, some of whom appeared to have been killed execution-style. The exact circumstances in which the victims were killed remain unclear because of strict restrictions on the media.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Police clashed with protesters hurling petrol bombs and bottles in central Athens Wednesday after an anti-government rally called as part of a general strike in Greece turned violent.
Riot police used tear gas and pepper spray against several hundred demonstrators after the violence broke out near the country's parliament. Protesters also set fire to trees in the National Gardens and used hammers to smash paving stones and marble panels to use as missiles against the riot police.
About 50,000 people joined the union-organized march in central Athens on Wednesday, held during a general strike against new austerity measures planned in the crisis-hit country. The action, the first large-scale walk-out since the country's coalition government was formed in June, closed schools and disrupted flights and most services.
Everyone from shopkeepers and pharmacists to teachers, customs workers and car mechanics joined the demonstration, seen as a test of public tolerance for more hardship after two years of harsh spending cuts and tax hikes.
"People, fight, they're drinking your blood," protesters chanted as they banged drums.
As the strike got under way Wednesday, Greece's prime minister and finance minister hammered out a ?11.5 billion ($14.87 billion) package of spending cuts demanded by the country's international lenders.
Greece's politicians have struggled to come up with more austerity measures that would be acceptable to its rescue creditors, with disagreements arising between the three parties that make up the coalition government. The country has been dependent on international loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund since mid-2010. Without them, Greece would be forced into a chaotic default on its debts and possibly into an exit from the 17-country bloc that uses the euro.
The country's lenders have demanded more fiscal reforms if they are to continue issuing more rescue payouts. The next payment of ?31 billion hinges on the government agreeing to further cuts.
Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras formulated a deal on the new ?11.5 billion austerity package for 2013-14, along with another ?2 billion in improved tax collection, a finance ministry official said Wednesday morning.
The other two party leaders were to be briefed by Samaras on Thursday, a party official said. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.
Wednesday's strike shut down the Acropolis, Greece's most famous tourist site, and halted flights for hours. Ferry services were suspended, schools, shops and gas stations were closed and hospitals were functioning on emergency staff.
One of those striking was Athens hospital worker Alkis Betses, who has seen his monthly salary fall from ?1,300 to ?800 (($1,680 to $1,035), says new cuts will bring it down to ?600 ($775).
"How can you survive on 600 a month, with ever-rising taxes, and continue to pay bills and buy necessary supplies?"
Betses said hospitals have been hard hit by spending cuts, with staff shortages and long delays in doctors' overtime pay for night shifts.
"The resentment has been there for long before the new measures. Imagine what will happen when they're made public," he said.

An Atlantic salmon leaps while swimming inside a farm pen near Eastport, Maine. Studies show farm-raised fish, like people, benefit from exercise.
Robert F. Bukaty/APWhen it comes to farm raised fish, it doesn't pay to let them be lazy. Fish like wild salmon, tuna and eel are built for the vigorous swimming required during migration.
These fish are "uniquely adapted to a physiology of high levels of exercise performance," says Tony Farrell, who studies fish physiology in the University of British Columbia Zoology department. "Therefore when we put them in constrained environments and remove predators, the consequences are they become a little more like couch potatoes."
When these fish are raised on farms in captivity, they are prone to a variety of health problems ? everything from heart disease to viral infections ? kind of like human couch potatoes. And, just like with humans, getting more active seems to make a big difference in their health.
?There's at least 50 years of research on the physiological benefits of exercise to fish, demonstrating that when fish are good swimmers, they have better cardiovascular fitness, a stronger immune system and are less prone to disease and physical deformities than their sedentary brethren. Yet very few fish farms use exercise as a way to improve the quantity and quality of their product. New research and a new book, Swimming Physiology of Fish: Towards Using Exercise to Farm a Fit Fish in Sustainable Aquaculture, are trying to persuade the commercial fish farmer to give it a try.
Harald Takle, a senior research scientist at the Norwegian Institute of Food Research (NOFIMA) says fish farms often lose as much as twenty percent of their salmon when they are transferred from fresh-water holding tanks to ocean cages. Part of the reason, he thinks, is that they are simply out of shape. He has been conducting research on the ideal exercise regimen to equip young salmon (called smolts) with the stamina to withstand the rigors of the ocean environment.
In captivity, Takle says the smolts are kept in tanks that maintain a continuous flow of water designed to keep the tanks clean. The fish swim constantly against the artificial current, but little attention has been paid to optimizing the speed of the current to challenge the fish, and give them a good work out. "So the question was, 'What is the optimal speed they should be swimming at?'" says Takle.
In a study published last year, Takle and his colleagues reported that the optimal speed is 0.8 to 1.2 body lengths per second. Less than that, and the smolts are too sedentary, more than that, and they are over-stressed. The study was funded by The Research Council of Norway's HAVBRUK programme and the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund.
To test how this exercise routine improved overall fish health, the researchers exposed the fish to a common salmon virus and monitored their survival. The survival rates of the exercise-conditioned fish were 13 percent higher than the "couch potatoes" used as controls. What's more, the fish in the exercise group showed better growth, better swimming fitness, and genetic tests revealed the activation of genes known to be involved in the immune response and disease resistance.
Takle estimates that in many cases, farmed fish are swimming at only half the pace they should be. Research in other labs has looked at the effects of exercise on aggression, different types of training routines, turbulence, diet and the use of robotic fish as swim "trainers."
Farmed fish currently make up nearly half of all fish consumed, and the industry is growing rapidly. While it produces a fairly cheap source of protein, disease, waste and a decreasing supply of traditional fish feed remain problems yet to be fully solved.
Increasing survival rates even just a few percent by exercising fish not only creates a healthier environment for them, but it may translate into billions of dollars for fish farms.
Fish exercise may aid the fish farming industry financially, Farrell says, but there's another lesson as well. "Exercise, in a world that is sedentary, is beneficial?even in fish."
So what does that mean to what you get on your dinner plate? Some experts suggest that bigger, stronger, and healthier fish may also produce changes in color, texture or overall appearance that make a more attractive meal to the consumer. But there's no evidence yet that the nutritional content is affected.

The State Department is preparing to remove the Iranian opposition group Mujahedin-e Khalq from the U.S. government?s terrorist list, siding with advocates who say the controversial organization should be rewarded for renouncing violence and providing intelligence on Iran?s nuclear program, senior Obama administration officials said Friday.
The decision to begin the process of formally lifting the terrorist label is expected to be conveyed to Congress in documents as early as Friday, according to two senior officials briefed on the matter. The move comes two weeks before a court-ordered deadline and just six days after the dissident group vacated its?former enclave in eastern Iraq, averting a?feared confrontation?with Iraqis who want the exiles out of the country.
Leaders of the group, commonly known by its acronym MEK, have been pressing U.S. officials for nearly a decade to rescind the terrorist designation, which they say has hampered their efforts to find new homes outside of Iraq. About 3,000 members of the group have existed in a kind of perpetual limbo in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, unwanted by their host country and fearing imprisonment or worse if forced to return to Iran.
